Hello all. After an unfortunate incident on Monday and a freak accident I now sadly have a broken shoulder. Can anyone advise me how long these things take to heal and how long until I am back in the saddle again? It is just in a sling as they can't plaster up there. Thanks. Sad little me

Aaahhh you poor thing, feeling any better? Is it your shoulder blade or your collar bone? I broke my collar bone and couldn't ride for 6 weeks but of course I did! Any more news on how he is behaving?

I know - feeling very sorry for myself

It is my shoulder blade - the doctor said 8 weeks and then after seeing my look of misery made it around 4-6 weeks... I have paid for him to be there for 2 weeks but don't know what to do with him after that! Just wondered if there was anything I could do to speed up this healing and get back on asap! x

Funny you should say that - my Mum is a Reiki master and I am going to stay with her for a week so she will be in her element if I let her do it on me as I never usually will!

l broke the bones that go across the top of my shoulder and tore all the ligaments that held them together,l have also broken my wrist which was plastered, let me tell you its agony with no plaster!!! l didnt ride for a week then got someone else to tack up my horse and just rode one handed with draw reins!!! Probably not a good idea really as 8 years later l still cant lie on my right hand side!!!

I have had problems with my shoulder for two years now and had an operation last year which has helped but still not 100%. my advice would be not to even think about riding until you've no pain in your shoulder, i carried on too long and made mine worse. Hardest of all was getting on not the riding but IMO its just not worth it. shoulder injuries do take along time to heal - sorry if thats not what you wanted to hear.

Fortunately don't have any experience of a broken shoulder, broke my ankle last April, was in plaster for 6 weeks & back riding 10 days after the plaster came off, was jumping 3 weeks later, have to say it still hurts, is stiff even though I've had loads of physio, & am currently trying to get an appointment to have the plates taken out as on one side they are really prominent under the skin, but guess what, THERE ARE NO APPOINTMENTS ON THE NHS EVEN THOUGH I HAVE WORKED FULL TIME & PAID TAX SINCE I WAS 16!!! Sorry, rant over, but looks like an expensive private bill for me!! In all honesty, I wouldn't be in too much of a hurry, & don't bother with NHS physio, it is total rubbish, if you can afford it go private. Sorry to be a bit doom & gloom, hopefully shoulders are better at healing than ankles!!

I got Symphuntum (bone knit) from the health food shop to take regularly and also wore my horses bio flow magnetic boot to help the healing - was walking again at 4 weeks, bones healed fantastically. Unfortunately the metalwork is causing my probs at the mo!

I have broken my elbow and my hand and niether was plastered. I took calcium and vitamin d but don't know if that helped or not. Both times i was told 8 weeks but i was back riding after about 6 with my elbow, but my hand was longer cause i broke the bone that controls the little finger so found it impossible to hold the rein until it was fully healed!
My advice would be take things at your own pace, if it hurts just be sensible. I'm guessing that as long as you're not riding horses that really pull you shold be able to keep your shoulder relatively still while riding.

Right, so I am defo going to try out some sort of bone healing supplement - need to heal asap cause horse is currently still stuck up at Nigel Taylor's which is very nice but also very expensive and cannot afford 6-8 weeks! You're right about NHS tho -really makes you wonder about paying your NI etc!!!
