I think I have broken my coccyx (the tailbone of spine) after a very silly fall recently. Two weeks on and it still hurts lots - can barely sit down and have to sleep on side let alone ride!

My main worry is that I have read that broken or fractured coccyxs never really come right and will always be painful if under stress and that I am never going to be able to ride properly again. I need to go to the docs for an xray to determine that it is broken / fractured but am starting to panic that it is broken because it is taking sooo long to feel even a little bit better. Sorry, bit of self pitying and premature post but was hoping for some stories of fully healed coccyx and lots of comfortable riding!!!

I did the same when I was younger, I can ride for about 2 hours max then it starts to hurt...still hurts to sit in the same position for too long though

BIG sympathies go out to you!!! and healing vibes :-)
I fell off on concrete in the summer and my darling coccyx hurts every time after I ride, travel in the car, sit down etc etc, dont get any sympathy tho', OH reckons if I can still manage to ride, cant be that sore! ha as if I'd stop riding!
Good luck anyway.

We thought mum had shattered hers when a horse reared over with her backwards on the road yonks ago - xrays revealed nothing but severe deep bruising - so deep that it didnt start to come out for 3 weeks - then her bottom went every colour under the sun - had to sit in a dougnut rubber ring thing - helped aleviate the pressure abit - its fine now - shes early 50s and rides my lot in flat seated saddles no probs. sore tail bones arnt nice though !!

I broke mine and it hurt seriously for about a year. I could ride though but couldn't sit in a chair for long. Use arnica to help with the bruising and buy some comfrey based herbal tablets to help knit and heal bone.

I saw a very good osteopath who did help enormously. Magnetic lower back support helped when riding.

I know how painful this is, when I did mine I actually cried as the pain was so bad!

I can sympathise too

, having seriously hurt mine twice, once falling off horse and once falling down stairs

All ok now though (few years later) and have no problem riding or anything

I really hurt mine in a fall nealry 10 years ago, and it hurt most when I was sitting in a chair (not good when you're jobs office based!). I was fine riding though. I had loads of physio and stuff at the time which just gave temp relief really. I asked my physio about it when it flared up again last year and he said there isn't really anything they can do long term, just take ibuprofen for the pain and glucosomine all the time. Apparently if it's very bad you can have them removed surgically, not sure I'd fancy that though!

Mine's been a lot better since I saw a McTimoney chriropractor but i would wait until any bruising's gone before you do (unless you want to cry!).
Yes, the most painful thing I've done.

I don't think I've got a coccyx left at this stage! I can ride fine tho'.

I bruised my ribs the other night, horse stopped at 18" high fence, then decided to jump from a standstill, I was sprawled all over his neck and took a pounding in the solar plexus ...

can't. breathe. properly. and the arnica tablets I got are some rubbish brand of homoeopathic ones

I've got two fractures a bit higher up in my back than my coccyx that won't heal and have been painful for about three years. The doctors keep confusing me about whether to leave them, fuse them or bolt them together.

I can ride now but jumping hurts alot and I can't walk for a fortnight afterwards. I also have a really collapsed shoulder and raised hip, even when I'm not riding, to compensate. Get it looked at, it might not be as bad as you think but if it is there might be something the docs can do to fix it.

oh poor you>>>>>>>>>>>>healing vibes coming your way>>>>>>>>>>>>>> i bruised mine when i was little pretending to be an a horse( of all things!) and jumpig over a jump in my friends back garden. couldn't sit down at school for about a week. fine after that tho! good luck.

I broke my coccyx too and it was painful for about 18 months. Didn't stop me riding though :-D
I also mangaged to break t12 and chip t11 on a subsequent fall. That didn't stop me riding either

I still get out and compete in endurance.

What I'm trying to say is, we are all different. I don't think you can put a timeframe on your pain levels and how it affects your life.
What will be, will be.
Take your analgesia, rest for the moment and you will know when you are ready to start again.
I hope you make a full riding recovery, I'm sure you will

I chipped mine in a fall four years ago, and now have suspected arthiritis in it

Is bloody painful when I ride or sit or anything!

agree with jules98! I broke mine when i was 14 schooling a nappy pony.Hospital did not push it back in place and 30yrs down the line i have soooo many problems with my back, scholiosis and spine is not an s shape but straight!where my body compensated, chiropractor was horrified!I am now in constant pain, but still riding!

God I feel your pain - fractured mine 3years ago.

Everyone always asks if mine was a riding accident - actually I jumped off what I thought was a normal table (I was sitting on it at the time) only to realise it was a actually a table football table and there was a metal handle sticking out that I bounced off via my coccyx.

Anyhow my advice would be Nurofen Plus - strongest painkillers you can get off prescription - which will help with pain and inflammation. Get a rubber ring and a seat saver for your saddle. Appreciate how comfortable the toilet suddenly becomes. And try not to cry too much. Problem is it hurts sitting down and standing back up - I used to go to sit down, it would hurt so I'd start standing back up and it would hurt even more - would just get stuck half up, half down and burst into tears.

Ouch poor you!!, I did mine had a little incident with a breezeblock! (dont ask!!) I had a few very painful sessions with a chiropractor who sorted it out for me.... id book an appointment if i were you..

Best wishes

first off all sympathy to you
I broke the tip of mine years ago falling down the slips

best things ever is to get a tyre inner tube and sit on it so there is no pressure on your coccyx but as well as that get a cushion to prop behind your back as with sitting on the inner tube you will be further forward on the chair. I don't really suffer as tend to sit on comfy chairs but did struggle several years later when at hairdresser and had to sit on their uncomfortable chairs for a couple of hours and got very uncomfortable and fidgety
ETS: I knew I needed a doctor when I went to sit down next morning and as soon as my bum hit the sofa I shot back as a very very sharp pain travelled up my spine!

Ditto

I tried to sit in a chair to get my breath back when I fell down the stairs and shot up twice as fast as I sat down

Had to sit on the coffee table til O/H got home from work and cut me a board to put in my chair

I fractured mine recently, I found that a great consultant and lots of advice really helped lots. The process initially is to minimise movement around the site. You will need xrays to confirm this. I didn't ride for between 6-8wks then rhode a lovely schoolmistress 4 times. It still hurts now althought not riding just in the cinema etc. My advice is go pivate and get xrays, also use lots of arnica as the bruising lasts for ever!

gd luck

I had a silly slide off fall from my horse when she spooked about 6 weeks ago and I landed sitting down, it was so bl***y painful, I was in agony for 2 weeks, couldn't ride etc and honestly thought I'd fractured it, persevered with the painkillers and it's slowly getting better but I'm still taking them before I ride!! Didn't ever realise how painful something like this could be. Hope you feeling better soon.

I snapped mine off completely when I was 14 (26 years ago). At that time nothing was offered apart from being told never to ride a horse again - yeah right - I still can't sit properly - have to sit on one buttock them the other - can't really go to the cinema or anything like that as sitting on those seats for just half an hour is as painful as anything - yet horse riding does not hurt it at all - I compete in showjumping, x/country etc but every day stuff really hurts - strange!!

You'll just have to put up with the pain unfortunately

I broke my coccyx about 4 years ago and every year I have it manipulated under general anesthetic and a steroid injection in it which leaves me pain free for 12 months at a time. I've gone from hardly being able to get out of the car or stand up from sitting position to doing hunter trials, 4 hour hacks and 3 day horse camps etc without a problem!!
