Well this will mostly be a glum post, but not too glum, or at least Ive got used to the glumness so it now doesnt feel too bad!
Dot had been slightly unlevel on her off fore ever since shoeing a few weeks ago. She was steadily improving and was almost completely sound. She was only walking, with a bit of trotting and she felt good, we even had a few strides of canter on our last ride and she felt mega. I felt less happy when I got her in a couple of days later and she had a boiling hot, swollen near fore leg, which she was lame on. I found out later that she had had a very crazy 10 mins of insanity "I'm bored and crazy" running around her field the night before.
Much icing over the weekend, brought it right down and her sound. She still went to the vets for a scan, to be told to come back in 10 days. My days have been fantastic trying to juggle work, horses and icing her leg as often as I could and even some trips to the spa. Much fun.
She decided to pay me back by having a mini hissy fit which resulted in this. Thanks Dot!!
With 6x a day icing routine we joked it would just be easier for me to sleep there!
On Friday the 13th (yeah I know) she went back and was rescanned. Crappy news was that she has tendonitis in the middle of her SDFT. The outside edge is still in tact, which is good. The prognosis is good too, the recovery time is insane long (48 weeks) but walking has already started and she should be trotting again by Christmas (hurry up Christmas!!) and cantering again by spring/summer, so hopefully it wont be tooooooo boring.
I decided to try and give her the best chance to making a full recover so today she had bone marrow taken to try to cultivate stem cells to inject back into the tendon. It was a stressful day as there was talk of risk of nicking her heart with the corkscrewy huge fat needle of doom thing. Everyone was on edge, my heart felt like it was going to explode out of my chest. Everything went well though and her marrow is winging its way to Scotland as I type (hopefully!)
Sleepy Dot
Scanning her to mark out points
Knarly needle!
Bone marrow (maybe too much information but I thought it was interesting!)
Back home all in one piece
My OH was glad I had lost weight when I told him I wanted to put a toy up for her
So all in all thats a bit crap, but at least shes still here (or she was when I left her!) and she should return back to normal. The vet said this type of injury had a very good return to normal work level. I asked about eventing and he said given time yes hopefully, not until the year after next though at the earliest. As far as bad injuries go, this is a good one. She can have all the time in the world. I did feel pretty heartbroken but a few days in and I'm much more ok about it. God knows if that will last when I have to walk the bored, box rested version of her in the winter!
Im trying not to think of the irony about me not doing anything with her until I got thin enough, loosing 7 stone to be light enough to ride her!! For a moment I thought about eating a big piece of cake, but then I realised that it was even more important for me to be lightweight to walk her while shes fragile, so I had a carrot instead!!!
Then onto Bug, who I had pretty much decided to advertise for sale. Now Im not so sure. Mostly because Ill have nothing to ride for the winter if he goes, plus no real competing in the summer if he goes. The other issue is obviously if I keep him he will go lame tomorrow and if I was to sell him he would never take a lame step, ever, and no doubt be a super star wonder event pony!! So I haven't really given it much thought for the last few days, I have just been having fun riding him.
The other day when I felt glum I had a play on him with some rainbow matchy/clashy clashy!
I decided to see if he could handle some spooky skinny jumps and he was a pro! Hes starting to look much stronger now. Much less wobbly baby horse!
Lots of happy ear photos!
Spooky filler for the first time!
Concentrating ears!
More professional
Then I decided that, because he is the most sensible horse I have owned that I would try going cubbing on him. I have never been hunting, ever. Bug has hacked out with 1 horse on 2 separate occasions ever and thats it. So daunted wasnt the word!! I shouldnt of worried because he was a pro. He trotted and cantered with everyone else without being silly, stood when I wanted him too and was a superstar!
Hacking back along the m4!
So thats it. Broken Dot but at least Bug is here to cheer me up (until he breaks again no doubt!)
Thanks for reading!
Carrot sticks and Broccoli for all x
