I just want to pre-warn people about possible broken bones. I got dragged by a horse with a rope around my hand and hurt my left ring finger badly, it swelled up like a balloon and went black, I went to the doctors 4 times in the next 2 wks, 4 different doctors told me my finger definately wasnt broken as I could move it a bit. On the 15th day I went for an x-ray only to find out it was broken and has heeling in the broken position and there is nothing they can do apart from give me physio, which will give me more mobility long term than to have it re-broken because of the time in having it treated, so now I am left with a deformed finger and a month on now and still a swollen finger. My message is ANY SUSPECTED BREAKS GET THEM CHECKED OUT!!!!

this happens a lot, my son thought he had broke his finger at work hospital said "no " 6 months on it has mended all crooked and causes a lot of pain. he has now got to have an operation on it.

i got my finger broken when i fell off a little mare and was stood on! luckily it was only tiny in my hand and healed in about 8 weeks.

But i agree, check any swollen/very sore limbs out! I got back on and did another SJ round, before i realised it was serious!!!

get well soon

thats awful but i'm afraid this sort of thing does happen alot my friend got kicked and she knew her arm was broken she went to the hospital but they said it was just badly bruised so she contiuned riding and doin other general yard duties a week later she was still in alot of pain so returned to the hospital and had to talk the doctors into giving her an x-ray after which they said yes it is broken. the only reason they dont do an x-ray every time is to save themselves money at the risk of causing someone a serious health issue is ridiculous

I have broken the third fingers on each hand the same way - lungeing, when the horse tanked off wrapping the lunge rein round the finger - you'd think I'd learn, wouldn't you? On both occasions I just strapped it to the middle finger with tape without going to hospital and they've been ok, except now they're a bit bent due to arthritis, but I can't do anything about that. Breaks are often missed at hospital, especially if they're "undisplaced" where there is often only a faint line to be seen on the X-ray and that's not often clear and it's only when it "displaces" and you get a clear line of break that it's diagnosed. This is common in the elderly with hip fractures and breaks.

Glad I am not the only one that was holding a rope like that. I should have known when I was sick when I done it that, that is not a usual reaction to hurting a finger, its just I trusted the doctors judgement, the hospital have been very helpfull, just not a lot they can do now the scar tissue has healed inbetween the break, I expect this is a common problem with horsey people then!
