Anyone fractured/broke or chipped their finger or knuckle.
Ive fell on mine, total div lol, bent it sidewards I think and its all swollen and is blue arround the back of the knuckle. I can bend it so I reckon its not broke but I cant straighten it properly and its sore to touch round the knuckle area.
Maybe its ligaments????

You may have dislocated it - in which case you will need to see a doctor to get it straightened. I did mine in November (and duely went to hospital) and it is still not straight and is very sore. Doctor has finally refered me to a specialist "Finger trauma" clinic in two weeks to see if an operation is needed. I think mine has taken so long due to ligament damage. Still managing to ride though !
Hope it gets better soon.

I broke my knuckle on my ring finger on right hand - the knuckle nearest the tip of the finger. whole finger went blue then black then green and finally yellow. couldn't bend it for ages. Mum strapped it to the middle finger for me - bit of gamgee stuff between them and told me to get on with it.

was bloomin' painful for ages, and even now (about 6 months on) it hurts if the hand gets really cold.

take ibuprofen, and give it time to heal.

Listenning to your stories has made me feel a bit soft lol. Mines the middle knuckle and I can bend it, not fully but it does move, just feels tight down the front of my finger when I do bend it. Maybe thats the swelling.
Thanks for replying, it cant be that bad though as I can lift my wine glass no probs

When i broke my middle finger i COULD move it so it doesnt necessarily mean yours isnt broken. With mine the pain got worse not better which is what made me go to the hospital, they didnt do much however, just strap it to the next one and mumble about possibly trying to straighten it!

You'll know by tomorrow if its broken i should think...

N xx

Sounds broken.

I fell off a while ago and dislocated my finger sideways. Popped back into place easily enough, still bent and flexed ok, if a bit stiff, so carried on. That night it was sore (hadn't really hurt before that) and the next morning it was purplely blue and a little swollen.

Took myself off to the A+E and had it xrays.

Discovered I'd split the middle bone right down the middle, from joint to joint!

Over the next two or three days it swelled up like a sausage and went completely blue-bruised from tip to knuckle joint.

It's all healed now but still squint and is alittle stiff and occasionally a little painful.

Its going blue down the side now

and is swollen from top knuckle to the bottom. Looks funny as my finger tip is still 'slim'.
Looks like a trip to A&E then if its no better tommorrow.
Im so mad at myself as I did it running up the stairs and missing a step and I fell.... on my finger of all things. God 3 weeks ago it was my toe and now this. Off for another glug of wine to drown my sorrows.

Thanks everyone.

I have broken and dislocated several fingers - had lots of swelling, bruising, and couldnt move them, but they healed up after about 6 weeks.

A word of warning - my Aunt fell and hurt her her little finger, locum GP told her it was not broken ... six weeks later it was still bruised, very swollen, wouldnt bend etc, in desperation she went to A&E, turned out it was smashed and she had to have an op, and it looks like she wont ever be able to bend it again!!!!!!!

Have yours checked, if she had got proper treatment sooner she would have a useable finger now!

i broke my finger when i came off one of my horses, thought nothing of it, taped it up but got forced to A&E some hours later by family and a nurse who was on the yard i was on at the time when they saw i couldnt straight it.
As i sat in A&E I watched the amount of drs swell around the monitor looking at an exray, all making comments at how bad the break was i was thinking poor sod thank god ive only twisted my finger - turned out it was me they were talking about and that id shattered the lower part of my finger and needed to have it wired back together it wasnt a nice op, ended up staying in hospital for 2 days as i react badly to morphine!
the 2nd op was even worse! well thats if i can call it an op! went back for a review of how it was going, had it exray then the dr decided that the wires could come out, so he got a pair of pliars and grabbed the wires 1 by one and pulled them out - no pain killers, anaesthetic or gas and air lol - he thought i was going to punch him it hurt that much.

I broke the top joint of the middle finger on my left hand 18 months ago. Must have done it turning my yearling out but as nothing untoward had happened, still cannot fathom what. The finger didn't start hurting until I was back down in the stable block about to muck out. All of a sudden it hurt like hell. Really hurt. It didn't occur to me that I'd broken it at the time, as I hadn't 'hurt it' doing anything. But I knew something was up. I cut the stable duties short, went home - took Ibuprofen for a few days and had a painful finger for a month or so. It's only that now I look at it that I realise I must have broken it. There a bony lump (exactly like a writer's bump in looks and size) on it and the finger cannot be straightened. The tip permanently bends downwards too far. I wish I'd had mine looked at, if only to have had it heal straighter.

I'd pop to A&E if you can. Seems you can break a finger doing absolutely nothing!!! I didn't even feel it when I did mine

Ice it for 10 - 15 mins several times, take arnica and put arnica on it if there is no broken skin. Strap it to the next finger with some gauze between them.

Agree with oldvic as that is what I did with my finger, Arnica and comfrey oil works wonders. It's still stiff and doesn't bend well at joint but that I've put down to my age.

I'm with oldvic + johnrobert.
Fractured my right little finger years ago, jumping baby horse. Didn't fall off or anything, but she jumped a bit to one side, + her neck hit my finger. My own diagnosis was clear! It was bent, + wouldn't move.
I just got on with it, stuck it to next finger, + kept on riding (+ typing, which was my job at the time)
(I'd actually like to say that we could maybe help stretched A+E by not mithering with them with non-life-threatening things)
Hope we all agree, BS x
