posted a few weeks ago about one of my TB mares who is greiving

to cut a long story short she reared and fell over through not wanting to load after being a very good loader

anyway now all swelling as gone i'am taking her for xrays (if i can get her loaded)as i feel she does not look right in her wither area
she as had no work just rest

everything bad just seems to be happening all at once--its not been a good year up to press

as anyone had a horse/pony with this and what was the outcome i'am searching for all the info so i can be prepared for the worst --

i have known three that have done this, one flipped over on the road and broke them totally flat where her withers once were! she had box rest pain relief etc.all feed/water buckets raised, no rugs. once she was she was comfortable swelling gone she was turned out for the rest of the season and as far as i know is still a happy succesful polo pony as is one of the others and third horse went on to win a seller at plumpton. all with a good breast girth and it is a bit difficult to get a saddle that fits... good luck

My instructor has a very sweet ex-racer with withers as flat as a pancake from an old injury like this one. Very unnerving to look at because it looks so major, but the horse is perfectly happy and fine, and does everything well.

A friend's little 12hh pony did this - he is now 11.2 :)

He went over in the ice and snow last December time (probably playing about) and had a huge swelling, couldn't put his head to the floor. Rehab consisted of box rest, buckets and haynets up at head height, painkillers and calmer to stop him stressing. He went up to Rossdales for an x ray and the vet said no way could he operate, as the whole thing was a mess, with bits of broken bone in there.

So it was left to heal, and he is now back in gentle work, having physio and not jumping yet but hopeful he will soon. I can find a few pics and possibly the x ray if that might help.

Generally there is no real lasting damage to a horses ridden life you would have to look into getting a made to measure saddle though. We have a horse in training at the moment who fracture the top off of 3 of the bones done when she reared and went over the field for no reason at all. She now has a normal side and a thicker side and is ridden in a treeless exercise saddle. She is also a chestnut mare who is prone to injuries!

thankyou for all for your responses

they have given me reassurance and now i feel more hopeful

i will take a picture tomorrow of her withers and try to post it on here

for her own comfort i raised her feed and water bucket when it happened
