A few days ago I found part of a broken glass beer bottle in my horse's hay. Having completely cleared the stable and had the vet check him, I am hoping he hasn't eaten any. But has anyonelse had this experience? I'm now searching every bale I open before I soak it and again before I feed it, but small pieces of broken glass can be missed however careful you are. The hay was from a reputable supplier and cost a lot of money but most of all my horse is a much loved member of the family and what broken glass could do to him if ingested doesn't bear thinking about.

I had a car crash bale of hay last year, first found small broken bits of windscreen glass under the haynet, then took the net down and investigated the rest of the bale..small burnt twisted bits of metal and burnt rubber. I had a couple of days of hell wondering if pony was going to corpse but nothing happened. I fed lots of wet chaff feeds and ad lib good hay to act as cushioning to the gut. Good luck!

Horses actually take more care with their food than we give them credit for and they are capable of sifting out small stones and leaving bits they don't like (talented ones can eat around pills in food!)

We make our own hay and it drives me nuts that people seem to think its fine to chuck all sorts of crap in the fields and even though dad keeps and eye out, he wouldn't be able to spot half a beer bottle.

Sadly our fields seem to increasingly littered by balloons, Chinese lanterns, golf balls, tennis balls, children toys and other litter including wine and beer bottles.

Then people wonder why footpaths really annoy land owners!
