I have a clinic coming up with a great trainer, and today i managed to dislocate my finger. Apparently it will take two weeks to heal but i can't waste that time as my clinic is a week after that. Does anyone have any tips on how i can improve my riding and horse with just one hand active?! I was thinking of maybe free schooling, lunge lessons or doing work at home with a gymball for balance etc (altho I haven't a clue of any exercises i can do at home?). My guy is a fiery tb so i can't risk lunging or ground work.

anyone have any tips on how i can keep busy for two weeks?? I've lost enough time with the bad weather, i can't afford to lose anymore! Any advice welcome!

its my left ring finger, its been popped into place and bandaged up to the finger beside it, but i can't hold or use it really!

Have you got a friend who could exercise your horse? That would be best, as you'll just end up a bit stiff if you're out of practice, it's the horse that needs to be kept in work. Failing that, walker, freeschooling, get someone to ride and lead yours from theirs?

Feel your pain!

Broke my metacarpal on my left ring finger. Took 1 week off and got straight back into the saddle. Was told 8 weeks - 12 weeks off! Yeah right! No one brave enough to ride my lad!

Rode my fiery racer with my thumb, index and middle finger!

I did put lots of vet wrap around my ring finger and little finger and supported the wrist as well.

Good luck

You don't need to. Just run the rein into your hand through thumb and forefinger!

I had a kick on the knuckles of my right hand some years ago - 4th and 5th finger knuckles ended up half-way up my hand, both long bones broken. Once it had been operated on, that was how I coped.

And it's a very 'light' way of using the rein too. You might find your fiery chap responds well to the sensitive 'feel' he gets.

Broke 3rd and 4th metacarpals in my left hand last May, hand was in a cast for 4 weeks, then told to take it easy for a further 4. I didn't dare ride since I could land in serious trouble at work if I made it any worse and so delayed my return, they also said if it re-broke it would need an op' so had to be sensible.

For the first 4 weeks I had a friend/trainer ride once a week and meanwhile did lungeing/groundwork 2-3 times a week. If he was silly in the school and couldn't hold him with one hand just had to let go but fortunately he seemed to realise I was 'disabled' and was saintly, at least until I was fit again! I think the lungeing etc did help and made me realise I'd left some gaps where we could improve his respect and discipline.

so long as you are safe to take ibruprofen then

ibruprofen jelly

I dislocate the thumb and the middle finger of the same hand quite regularly

I slosh this on, maybe take a tablet and then sleep with my hand protected and out of the bed. Usually heaps better in the morning.

good luck!
