Well, I had more X-rays done this month and they are scary.. Pedal rotation from crap farriery.. Farrier is 3 weeks overdue as he was significantly injured by a youngster jumping on his leg.. Horse is still sound, god knows how..

Vet said his digital pulses are still bounding.. (I'm post op so my mum has been looking after them).. There is no metabolic reason, he has no grass and is on soaked oat straw with a bit of hay mixed in, and negligible hard feed with supplements..

Can't think of any reason why he's still laminitic and the vet is stumped..

Does anyone have any left field suggestions as to a reason?

I'm so sorry to read this.

I don't believe laminitis is caused by bad farriery but of course can be made worse by this as well as bad or unhelpful trimming. My advice is have a look at the emergency diet on the laminitis tab (bottom of lami page) follow it to the letter and join the Yahoo group linked on the first page. http://www.ecirhorse.com/

ps. I would soak hay for a minimum of 12 hours and rinse well. I'm assuming testing isn't an option. The increased soaking time is belt and braces and is necessary for many horses in acute laminitis.

If this doesn't help, I've found that soaking for two to three hours then changing the water and soaking again and rinsing can help. I believe this may work when the hay available is very high in sugars and one soak isn't able to remove enough to make a difference. Changing the water allows more sugar to leech out. Once the sugar level is equal in hay and water no more will be removed.
I have done this for my pony in the past successfully until I could source a different batch of hay.

Whatever the cause this horse needs a farrier now, the longer he is left without correct trimming the worse it will be getting. My farrier trims laminitics every 4 weeks, any longer then they are putting extra strain on the structure of the foot which means the episode lasts longer and the possibility of further rotation is more likely.
I would be getting any sound farrier to come asap, most are happy to help at times like this even if you have never used them before.
Is he shod at the moment. Has he been tested for metabolic issues.

How is the horse still sound with pedal rotation and bounding digital pulses??

Is this horse on boxrest with pads to support his feet?
