Would rather go off a recommendation than a random phonebook enquiry - want someone who won't rip me off!

My lorry will not start. Batteries fully charged, connections all ok and don't think it is the starter motor.

Trouble is I could do with someone who will come out as we have no 24v farm machinery to jump start the thing.

I don't know a mechanic, but is the engine turning over? If so, it's not the starter motor, so check the fuel filter as they often get clogged.

If the engine is not turning over, then it could be the starter motor or the starter motor solenoid (sorry techy term). If you hear a 'click' when you turn the ignition to the starting position, then there is a good chance it's the motor. Apparently a couple of good clouts with a hammer will help (of the starter motor, not the lorry!).

I *thought* it was the starter motor as it does click but the click seems to be coming from the battery?

Is the solenoid the connection? If so it may well be that.
 
The solenoid is an electric switch that allows a large amount of electrickery to pass to the starter motor. If you get a click but the engine does not turn over you may be looking at a starter motor problem, OR flatish batteries.

Batteries can seem to be OK as they will work the lights and beep the horn, but when you try to work the starter with the headlight on, you will see them dim down. If that is the case with your lorry, it would be worth charging the batteries over night and then giving the starter another go.

If that does not work, it's time for the spanner man.
 
What sort of truck is it? On the old Cargos they had two solenoids and the one on the chassis rail near the battery is always going due to corrosion.

One way to test is to run a wire from battery positive to the wire on the solenoid on the starter motor but for gods sake make sure it is out of gear!

If it turns over then it is the chassis rail solenoid and if not then it is the one on the starter motor.
