I have just found out my clydesdale mare has broken her pedal bone on her off fore has anyone else ever dealt with this problem? She has had egg bar shoes put on and is on complete box rest at the moment i am worried about trying to keep the egg bar shoes on she has over reach boots on but these only just fit my poor girl :( and suggestions on keeping her amused in her stable (she has lots of likits and choped up carrots hidden in her hay and lots of ready grass) would be grately appricated has any one else dealt with this how long has it taken to heal?? what process did you do?? :(

Drop the carrots and likits - neither are great, especially for horses on box rest.

Routine is the key to keeping her happy, as well as a stable companion if possible. Hang a swede up for her to play with and a radio on classic fm or similar.

she can't eat swedes and she has baby teeth and really struggles to bite bits of but thankyou the carrots in her hay net keep her amused for ages and the likit is a horselyx one that is full of good vitamins for joints and bones but thanks :)

Likit's are full of sugar - so should be used sparingly, especially for a horse on box rest. And carrots are also considered to be bad for horses when fed in large enough quantities. You are better having a Rockies in the stable.

A horse that has a foot problem may be pre-disposed to laminitis - so I would be doing everything possible to avoid anything that might trigger an attack. Hence my comments on Likits and carrots.:)

Spend the food ration on ad lib forage rather than treats. Space the nets out. Grooming, reiki, shiatsu, Masterson Method etc can entertain her while you are there. Horses don't do Sudoku. As long as she has forage and company, she should manage.
When my friend's horse was on box rest I would bring my Tank to the door every day for them to groom each other.

I have been through it twice. One was sound in six weeks, the other took six months, but both returned to full athletic soundness.

Very sorry to hear about your mare.

My son's sj pony fractured both hind pedal bones when she double barrelled at brick wall!

She had four months box rest, not allowed out at all, then a further month in a tiny (two stable size) paddock, moved daily so she ate instead of messing around. This was followed by six weeks ridden walking before introducing trot & canter. She returned to full work including sj & xc.

Good luck.

Thankyou for your replyies i am so worried about her as she is a tonne of horse being a big clydesdale we have no idea how she has done it as she is not a door/wall kicker i have an appointment with my vet to sit down and go over long term plan of action. she so far has been on box rest for 10 days i am lucky she has a big stable so can move around she is only 6yrs old and ive had her since she was 6 months old i really hope she recovers fully :(

Agree with Amy may drop the likits all licks I have ever looked at are full of sugar in a horse of her size I dont think a sensible amount of carrots will harm .
Cabbages some horse love these give several types of chop like products readi grass ( high in protein -and energy so watch amounts ) hi if lite molasses free and Alfa a molasses free both these have soya oil so watch if calories are an issue .
Loads of hay if she's a fatty wieght gain on box rest is inevitable but I rather feed fibre and get them calm and worry about wieght later.
The one I knew with a broken pedal bone has six months box rest, I hope yours is'out 'quicker than that.

I think the prognosis depends on where the fracture is. Our 2yo chipped a bit off the wing of his pedal bone earlier this year. It's slightly different with babies as their bones are still soft so we've been lucky, as his seems to have healed really quickly and he was back out after two months.

Mine broke a pedal bone at 6 years old, no idea how or why. Made a full recovery and is now 25 years old and unfortunately suffering his first ever bout of laminitis. He's not quite a Clydesdale but is a fairly chunky chap (too chunky right now apparently).
