Broken ribs, lacerated liver, punctured lung!

only the broken ribs thankfully! well, cracked, is that the same thing? They were **** painful anyway - i had to kind of roll out of bed for about 6 weeks as couldn't sit up normally. i was riding within a couple of weeks, that actually didn't hurt as much as other stuff, though you wouldn't want to be on something that pulled too hard.
Sympathy if it's you, sounds awful.

My aunt broke 7 ribs punctured her lung and smashed her shoulder in a riding accident and it took her 9 months to ride again and she still hasnt got full use of one of her arms back.

It didnt help that the hospital punctured her lung AGAIN when they put the chest drain in.

I think Mike Tindall did this to himself in a game a couple of weeks ago, hes going to be out for long time due to the risk of further tearing to his liver if he get stood on in a ruck. Cant see your horse and you being involved in a ruck, but should imagine the same risk applies!!

Well that exactly the injury that Mike Tindall (Zara Phillips rugby playing OH) suffered last week and he will not be back till next season. it was considered life threatening

Broken ribs once out hunting. It was 6 weeks before I had a good night's sleep, every movement was agony.

It was my sister's wedding too - I look a bit wan in the photos!

Even 30 years later, if I get ill with a cold or something, my ribs hurt!

Hiya Senty yes i can hold my hand up to having all three at the same time, came off the horse, he missed me with his front legs and bought his hind legs down straight through my ribs, 7 broken ribs, a punctured lung and a lacerated liver, 2 weeks in intensive care and it was a long way back!
I think the answer depends on how old you are and how fit, i was 43 at the time, and it took ages, 7 years on im still not perfect, get breathless and cant lift anything, and as for running, still at 50 i dont need to go running!
I was back in the saddle within 8 weeks, albeit very carefully and very slowly!
I then decided that i really ought to give up riding as it was the 2nd time id broken the same 7 ribs, and the next time i knew i wouldnt be so lucky!
I wish you good luck, but take it easy and slowly, its a long way back, and mighty painful.
As you probably know the liver regenerates itself so i wouldnt worry too much about that, its the long term effect on the lungs which is the big problem.
Take care and i wish you well, and BE CAREFUL!!!!!!

Hiya Sinner

Yep that was what happened to me!!

Came off and he was giddy and kicked out with his back legs and got me on the right hand side. Only two ribs though thankfully and no intensive care. A chest drip for three days. Am out now though and doing my breathing exercises. Am having a glass of wine too though as feel I need it!. Thanks for letting me know how you get on and Take Care too xx

That's exactly the injuries that Mike Tindall did playing rugby.

Get well soon.

Edited because I hadn't read the other replies at the time and now realise I'm a parrot!

oh no poor you, please take it easy. I broke 2 ribs in my back and cracked my pelvis whilst jumping 5 years ago and it was 3mths before I was back in the saddle, but probably would have been less if I'd had my own horse then!

Ouch , take it easy.
Monest take 6 weeks to heal apparently. I fractured my jaws, nose etc recently and have been told 6 weeks to allow the bones to set. I did have to have surgery too so the after affects of the GA take a while to wear off too.

Sounds like your lung will be the part that takes longest to settle so dont over do it and put stress on yourself
