I broke my talus bone (in the ankle) in 4 places and broke my fibula on 11th July. I had an operation and had wires, screws and a plate holding me together!
shocked.gif
My main wound broke open after 9 weeks and you could see the metal work in my fibula, so the surgeon had to operate to take it out 18 months early. So I have had abit of a set back. It's been 13 weeks now and I am still not allowed to weight bear and I have to keep my leg elevated 24/7
mad.gif

Has anyone else suffered a talus break
confused.gif

How did it affect you
confused.gif

What will physio do with me
confused.gif

How long before you rode again
confused.gif

I'm wanting to invest in some new riding boots, which will be warm and offer my ankle protection, support and cushioning.... any suggestions appreciated please

Here's my xray pic so you know where the bones are....

DSC00891.jpg

I had similar I had the long plate like you have, but mine is longer as there were 2 fractures on mine meaning a peice was missing. then on the opposite side I broke off the nobbly bit and not the talus itself, so have a srew holding this in place.

I did mine in January 09 and while I have been up and about riding since may it still causes me a lot of pain and my talus slips out of place sometimes so I have to wriggle it back into place before I can put weight on it.

My GP has refered me back to see specialist again. Findgers crossed

I would imagine yours is more difficult because the talus is squashed between the other bones so has to be VERY strong as to not get crushed.

My physio involved, bike, wobble boards, standing on one leg playing ball etc

Are the xrays before they removed the metalwork?
Are you now in a POP (Plaster)

I guess you are non weight bearing up on crutches at the moment?
I wouldnt rush into riding as the ankle bears a lot of weight and the joint takes a lot of stress from the stirrup and the weight pushed through it
Physio will get the joint moving again to help prevent it becoming too stiff
when you go back to fracture clinic they will probably xray the leg to check the bone is uniting and healing well.
Unfortunately the secondary infection will probably delay things a while?
Are you still on antibiotics and has the wound healed up?
Boots with a zip may help as you may have difficulty forcing your foot into the elasticated type due to stiffness and swelling

OMG.... I would freak if that happened to me! I can do animal blood, guts and gore.... but not human stuff, especially on me! But oh lordy, having to put a bone back in place!!! My surgeon had a feel for the wire last week and I nearly died lol! WUSS I know lol
blush.gif

I know a few people what have rushed themselves, and years on having problems and needing further operations! So I am being a VERY good girl doing as I am told for once!
cool.gif
I don't want to be out of action any longer then necessary!
tongue.gif
At least my main time off will be through cruddy winter months, whilst the boyfriend has the joyous job of looking after my horses in the cold, wet dark winter wuhahahaha!!!
smirk.gif

The surgeons said I have an over 70% chance my talus could die off
shocked.gif
so god knows what would happen then. That is why they are leaving me so long before weight bearing, they said depending on my xrays it would be 12 weeks at the earliest, but with the further op, it has cause a big DELAY... oh mannnnnn!
frown.gif

I do appreciate it's not the end of the world, could have been worse, so really I'm a lucky girl!
grin.gif

Wish you the best of luck with your injury, fingers crossed for you xx

Yes the xrays are before the plate was removed! I am in a soft cast plaster, which is removable as I have to change my dressings on my wounds. If you like gorey stuff, pm me and I will send you my email to add me to facebook, got an album of pics of my wounds! Didn't think I would be too popular posting those on here lol!!
tongue.gif

Thank goodness I'm not on anti-biotics anymore, they make me poorly sick
frown.gif
Yes I use crutches, but my foot isn't allowed to touch the floor.

It's been 3 weeks since my last operation. Had my staples out last week, and had to have butterfly stitches to keep it together as it broke open slightly AGAIN and bled blurghhhh!
ooo.gif
yuck! Back next week for xrays, and I hope it's healed enough to start weight bearing!!

I am NOT going to rush it though, the surgeon says jump and I will, but until then i'm going to be good! Learnt from friends mistakes
crazy.gif

One friend only had a minor ankle break and didn't need an operation, just had to be potted up and keep it elevated for a poxy 4 weeks, non weight bearing. STUPIDLY after only 2 weeks she started weight bearing on it! 18 months later and she is having MAJOR problems, the hospital said they have no option to operate, pin and wire it up! SILLY GIRL!
frown.gif

Unfortunately, it is fairly common to end up having to get them internally fixed if bits of bone are missing or out of alignment that simple casting cannot mend.
Fingers crossed that it will heel up with no more problems.
It is actually a good sign that it bled - means there is a good blood supply to the edges of the wound which means the tissue isnt dead, so hopefully will heel.

Ah cheers for that reassurance! I was scared it meant it wasn't going to heal up! Admittedly it broke open where the fibula had gone through my skin! blurghhhh yuck yuck yuck!!
crazy.gif

You sound as if you know what you are talking about!! Are you in the medical world??
confused.gif
Or is it you have had plenty of experience yourself lol
tongue.gif

OoooOOOoo I see! No wonder you know your stuff! The orthopaedic nurse that treated me whilst we were waiting for the surgeon absolutely loved seeing the exposed metal work, sick lol!!! I don't know how you do it! I am very glad and grateful there are people like you out there, but I just wouldn't have the stomach!!

Are you allowed to say on here what hospital you work in?? My surgeon is Mr David Gale in Lincoln. He has done a really tidy job of it! xx

Yes metalware poking out of bits of bodies generally does generate a good nosey from the nurses....

Im okay as long as im not the patient!!!!

Yes, I work at James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough

Good that you have a good surgeon, makes all the difference!

*cough*
I managed to re-break my navicular bone on wednesday... from tripping over my own feet
blush.gif
when it was x-rayed they had 4 different doctors look at it, including an orthapedic surgeon who told me that it was an old fracture - ive never broken my foot before!! I was just left to hobble around
tongue.gif

the navicular is the small boney bit on the inside btw
smile.gif

As a training physio, the physio would start to flex your foot when out of plaster to try and re-gain normal movement and to build up muscle tone again, so that when you can weight bear the muscles arent all floppy!
smile.gif
they will work out range of movement before by looking at your other foot, and then try to regain that level on the injured one.
They will also give you exercises to do to help stimulate the muscles and so the fibres start to build back up again
smile.gif

sounds very painful, and the talus is one of the most important bones in the foot so fingers crossed!

Ah Middlesborough, I have some distance relatives that live there, my Grandma came from there! Don't ask me where, I'm clueless (in more ways then one lol!!)
grin.gif

So far I have been really impressed with my treatment, the hospital staff have been amazing. My surgeon is lead consultant of orthopaedics there,so fingers crossed I've good one xx

*feels that hho could make full use of an orthopaedic nurse*
tongue.gif

OP thats an impressive amount of wiring in that pic, I sprained the inside of my ankle in june and that was bad enough. I second that you don't realise how much pressure the ankle takes when riding even when walking (though lots of riding without stirrups- fab for my seat!)

Currently being a good girl too atm as bust my arm (elbow end) 3 weeks ago, not in plaster atm but am waiting till my rexray on monday to decide what to do but one handed riding in field is on the cards next week. Not sure which is worse not driving or not riding.
smile.gif

OUCH!! Nasty! Have they potted you up??
frown.gif
Do you need surgery?
confused.gif

Training as a physio eh, perfect for you to know what to do and what not to do for yourself! Or will the doctor expect you to go to physio properly??
confused.gif

When I had my staples out last week, I had to wait for 15 minutes without a pot on before I got in the plaster room, and my foot dropped. The orthopaedic nurse had to manipulate it to get it back into the correct position, I nearly shot backwards off the bed LMAO!! Actually, I clearly wasn't laughing at that moment in time!
tongue.gif

The surgeon said it was one of the worst bones you can break in your body, if not one of the most awkward! The few talus breaks he has seen in his career have only been halved, I split mine into quarters! If you're going to do something, you do it properly eh, and I made a right proper job of it
frown.gif

But hey ho, lesson to be learnt somewhere I am sure xx

I cracked my elbow when my bay fell on top of me of the road... the pain was immensing!!
frown.gif
Swimming did wonders for me, the water took the weight of my arm whilst I concentrated on movement and flexing!!
wink.gif

I know what you are saying about the not driving and riding... utter hell! I feel like a bird with my wings clipped! I'm normally so independant and active - an outdoor girl - now prisoned inside with my leg constantly in the air!
crazy.gif

I can't wait for the day just to be able to sit with both of my legs down (easily pleased lol) makes you realise how lucky you are, and grateful. Just imagine them poor sods who are paralysed :'(

nope, they just said that ive hit the fracture again so will be sore
frown.gif
but I asked the nurse for a tubi grip bandage for support, and have been hobbling around with that on, although i am going to go and get a proper support for it!

Nah, no physio for me, although i suspect that if i do need physio my friends will help!
tongue.gif

yeah, we had to learn all the bones in the lower half of body last week, and then we got to draw them all on each other
grin.gif

The talus is the one that takes all the weight when you step on it - so quite a major one to break
crazy.gif

fingers crossed you heal well!

My surgeon said that, and also I face the problem that it's a a main feed of blood supply goes through it too (or something like that)! I'm following his advice to the 'T', problem being, I'm not medically minded, so when I do go to the hospital I try absorb as much info as I can but it's almost impossible lol!
crazy.gif

Take it easy, and don't damage yourself any further, cotton wool springs to mind lol xx
cool.gif

Don't think I've broken that bit..
I fell down a flight of stairs - 15 stairs, platform, 15 stairs in on go and broke some part of my ankle and my ligaments. The bone shifted so it was pressing on the skin, and it went a lovely colour. I had 2 weeks in plaster with under arm crutches and then changed onto a walking plaster
I broke my foot as well (the other one!) just by walking on it and had a walking plaster on for that
The ankle # affects me now sometimes, if I run up stairs something "gives" and I get a shooting pain for a few mins. I also can't bend my ankle inwards - as if you were wrapping your legs around a horse.

Medical people in the thread - when I have had my x rays, I got called in to see a consultant but I was very high off painkillers so don't remember much! However they did say that the bones in my feet and ankles (this is before I broke them) are fused? How does this affect you?

Thanks, good to see how things can be effected on a long term basis. I appreciate what you mean about the drugs and taking things in! Even though I had things explained to me, it took me until 3 weeks after my operation to actually take in the info (when I was off the drugs lol)

I will have a gander at those boots, thanks for the advice!
grin.gif

Thanks for that! I have a pair of the ariat lace up ones with steel toe caps, and wear Treadstone gaitors! I had my accident in the sodding things luckily! I was very naughty always riding in my hunters in the past, I dread the thought of what the outcome could have been if I hadn't been wearing decent boots!!
shocked.gif
frown.gif

What do you recommend for around the yard?? Do you find it difficult with your ankle getting it in and out of wellies??
confused.gif

LMAOOOOOOO! We have similar taste!
tongue.gif
I have been eyeing then up but thought it may be too awkward with no zips! Do you rate them warmth wise? My feet are usually like ice blocks in winter in my usual hunters, even wearing 3 pairs of skiing thermal socks!!
crazy.gif

Been looking at the mountain horse short boots, the rim frost and the other similar looking boot. Wondered if they would give my ankle support and stability
confused.gif

I do think they're warm. YO has Le Chameau and often swaps them to short boots as they're too hot!! I'd have had Le Chameau but couldn't get any at the time
I used to have Mountain horse lace up boots, and they were pretty supportive. I think as long as they have a zip or lace and fit close to your ankle they're a winner

Bloody hell you are brave!

I tore all the ligaments holding the tib and fib together and cracked the tib just below my knee as consequence! Had to have my tib and fib pinned together as it looked like I had two golf balls as ankle bones! horrible

I started riding after 15 weeks (this was march 2008) but I now have issues with loads of cracking when I stand up.

Fine during riding though, first 5 mins is always a bit sore.

blimey!!

Last august i managed to do this....
loux-raysm.jpg

have to say recovery from that..zip up ariat boots are the best! they offer a great amount of support..

plus when you get your cast off this magnificent thing called fisocrem..it works wonders..i've found it relives stifness!

plus [just skimmed through] if your on antibi's ask for more..i know its a pain..but i got an infection from the operation(s) and its better to be safe than sorry...

hope you get better!! xx

OUCH! THAT SOUNDS NASTY!!!

Do you find certain boots are better then others? Make wise? Style wise? ???

I wasn't brave a such, I was in absolute shock and pumped with adrenaline, I didn't feel it, hear it, it didn't even hurt believe it or not!! I felt nothing! I was too shocked!
