Hi new to the forum I was thrown into a wall at speed on Saturday and hospitalised for 2days with a fractured s4 and l1 and damage to ligaments around left of pelvis , I'm currently pretty much bed bound as swellings coming out but does anybody have any experience with this and know how the recovery process will be ? Thankyou for your time x

No idea on recovery time i'm afraid but just wanted to say ouch, and I hope you get well soon and the pain isn't too horrendous.... I had very bad sciatica and was house bound for 6 weeks if that helps give you an idea....

I fractured my L1 vertebrae in 2012 after getting bucked off a friends horse. I was in hospital with flat bed rest for 2 days whilst they determined the fracture was stable. After they did they told me to be as restricted as possible for 8 weeks so no riding, excercising, heavy lifting etc but after that I went back to normal!
It was very painful for 3/4 weeks after that I didn't notice it so much and after 8 weeks I was back to normal and luckily I have had no problems since! :)

What did the consultant say? Is that it - you've got a diagnosis and you're back home. Any follow up appointments?

I fractured l1 & l3 in December. As you say no riding etc but I am now back on board though can't do sitting trot & canter can be iffy! Don't try too hard to develop your core/ suppleness. I've had to ease off a bit.

Ouch! You have my empathy.

I had a compression fracture at L2 a few years ago, came off at apex of jump and landed on my feet (bad idea!). Flew across school surface, but thankfully wearing BP so didn't make it worse.

Didn't know it was broken, so after moment or two of intense pain and a wee rest, I got back on, though didn't jump again.

Went to A&E next night as friend was worried about me. Three days in hospital then four weeks I think of lying flat, though could walk around with brace on, but couldn't sit down, then I think three months with a brace. It was six months total before I could ride again.

I had physio and went to equipliates to gently rebuild my core.

I hope you heal quickly and well.

Not personally, but I have helped 2 riders return to riding after breaking their backs, so I just wanted to reassure you that it is possible (I do confidence work). They went on to do jumping and everything.

From their recovery I would say take it easy, get good physio and do the exercises once the brace is off. Once riding do a lot of walking initially to re-recruit the muscles that were damaged, and ease off all that has stiffened up whilst immobile.

One girl was a full year before full riding, as in jumping etc, back to previous levels, but she was in her 50s, and had fractures in 4 vertebrae. I know another person who had a smaller amount of damage who was back eventing within 4 months!

I broke my vertebrae twenty odd years ago...4 weeks flat in hospital...up wearing a brace and I was back at work within 3 months..but admittedly didn't ride for a few years afterwards...expect I could have done though. I should have done as Red advised and kept up muscle and suppleness but hindsight is a fabulous thing. Good luck..listen to your body and keep us updated.

Poor you, take it easy.

My daughter fractured her T12, I cant remember exactly how long she was off, she was definitely sore for 4-6 weeks, and I think had somewhere in the region of 4-6months off riding

Seriously, do yourself a favour, and take the time to let your body heal, better to wait a little longer now until you are 100%

My mum broke, T11, T12, L4 and had abnormalities to 6 other vertebrae. She also broke, sternum and many ribs. She had 10 days in hospital and then had to wear a brace for 3 months and wasn't allowed to do much at all. A year later she is back riding, if only hacking mainly and only walk and trot. It took a year for her to feel almost normal however due to how many broken bones she will never be back to the old "normal". Take your time, don't rush things and please listen to the doctors.

Thankyou wobble that sounds similar to me, I had the two days flat then discharged with stable fractures on day 5 now and still incredibly sore but swelling is still coming out , I'm hoping if I'm sensible and just rest il be up and riding again in 8 weeks too :) x
