My boy bronco-ed me off last night, he went ballistic!! carried on broncoing for about a min and a half even after he got me off, hes never done anythink like this before. The only think I did differently was that I didnt put a numnah on him! It looked pain related, he was REALLY upset.......going to try him tonight with the numnah on and see if that was the problem BUT I find this VERY strange if that is the problem!! saddle was fitted about 2 months ago, teeth done around the same time. Dont suppose this has happened to anyone else? and Im thinking of suing him for whiplash!! ha ha!!:p

Poor you hope you didn't get hurt! Bad though because saddle should be comfortable without numnah really.....maybe just the different 'feel' gave him the spooks? i would lunge him first with numnah just to check there isn't something else going on. I would also ask saddler back to double check fit if it was my horse.......hope he's ok....

Was the saddle new? If so flocking may have settled by now and need a bit of adjustment. Or perhaps he's put a touch of weight on with the spring grass...? Do lunge before you get on next :)

Yes, good idea to lunge him in saddle and numnah first, must admit I will be bracing myself when I test it out tonight:(

When he finished broncoing, he stood up on his back legs for a while to!! he REALLY wanted that saddle off his back:( He had all four feet off the ground and was bouncing a good few feet into the air, when I saw the imprints his hooves had left in the ground I was glad he hadnt come down on me!! and hes not shod either!!

I had trailered him out for a nice sunset hack, luckily I was ok just aching today and do think Ive got whiplash, we were on grass, my foot was stuck in the stirrup for a while but I managed to shake it free, thankfully safety stirrups and I managed to catch him pretty quickly.

I got the saddle at Christmas and it was reflocked 8 weeks after that, I think I'll get the fitter back out anyway as if all is well tonight with a numnah it'll need checking as it should be fine without a numnah really. I'll get his back checked to, he has that every 6 months and has never had any probs so far.

Could well be the feel of it without the numnah, a friend has a weird horse who had to have a numnah or he would explode bigtime and she thought it was the feel of leather on his back. Could it be that the numnah is warmer than leather when it goes on and that yours did not like ht cold of the leather on his back? Hopefully lunging first will let you see if there is going to be a reaction again tonight.

My ned doesn't like the feel of leather on her back either. She will quite happily go numnah less with my side saddle as it has linen lined panels but with normal saddles, she doesn't seem to like the slick cold feeling of leather even when you place it on her back before it's even girthed up. She bucked when I was trying my Barnsby saddle, put a numnah underneath and was happily going around in an outline using her back with a nice soft elastic contact. This is why saddles up until recent times 60's? 70's?) were always lined in serge and linen as it's warmer for the horses back (so you didn't need a numnah) and it moulds better to their shape.

My girth was too short, didn't notice with pad on but without it he was getting pinched between bottom of saddle pad and top of synthetic girth. Tolerated it for 20mins then told me all about it with bucking fit. Now has a new girth and no bucking!

When I had my new saddle fitted the saddle fitter asked before I rode in it if he had ever been ridden without a saddle cloth. I thought what a strange question but she had quite a few experiences of horses bucking like mad without a saddle cloth whilst trying new saddles.
I think it's the feel they don't like and the cold from the leather.

Wow!! Im really surprised with all the responses about horses not liking the saddle without a numnah, feel more confident thats all it was now....well fingers crossed anyway :-) Thankyou
