Hi guys, my Broodie has a 4 month old at foot and hes a big chappy! Shes recently started losing weight because shes giving everything to him and since shes a thoroughbred i dont want her dropping off any more. Id like to keep Otti on the mare for as long as i can really as i dont like weaning too early. What do you suggest i can give her to get a few pounds on the lass!?
Shes currently on:
Baileys stud cubes
Dengie Hi Fi (would feed alfa a but it sends her off her trolley)
Sunflower Oil

She is out at grass but sadly theres not enough as i would like but theres not a lot i can do about that for the time being due to being on a livery yard. I have been putting big round bales of haylage for her to munch on ad lib.. so what else can you guys suggest? I did wonder about changing her onto a stud balancer and putting it with A&P Old faithfuls as she did fantastically on this before she foaled Otti. What do you all reckon?
Thanks!!
x

If she was mine, I'd be upping the quantity of Bailey's stud cubes and maybe adding some stud mix too. For an old TB mare I had, once foaled she would have a big 3lb scoop of both, morning and evening although our grass was better than yours sounds just now. Don't forget that foal is probably digging in to her feed too. It sounds a lot, but any less or anything different to that and she lost weight within days, that amount of those feeds kept her looking and feeding the foal well.
Do you have to feed a chop as those feeds should be sufficient and chop just takes up room in the stomach that could be better used by a better feed; most broodmares don't need or want chop of any description if they are given the right amounts of stud feed and you certainly won't need to add anything like oil either.

I would be cautious about upping the feed of a mare with a big foal of 4 months if he's growing fast. You'll boost her milk supply and make him grow faster - particularly if she lets him tuck into her hard feed too - and you'll get growth-related problems, possibly OCD!

Plenty of good haylage is the safest option - keeping her on her current ration. Broodies DO tend to lose weight in lactation - they soon put it back on once foal is weaned.
