I phoned my insurance company to advise that my mare is in foal, they confirmed she is covered for problems foaling etc, but not for routine (obviously) when I asked about the foal they said that the foal could not be insured for the first 30 days, so I had a bit of a phone around, one company (and I can't remember which now) said they would cover the foal from birth to 30 days under the mares policy - anyone else heard of this and know which companies do cover the foals from birth ??

My mare's insurance company offered an add-on to my policy which will cover her foal for the first 30 days. I can't remember how much it was but it wasn't unreasonable. The foal in case of death will be valued at the price of the stud fee.

When my mare was confirmed in-foal, NFU added a foaling extension to her insurance whihc covered her for anything to do with foaling and the foal up to the age of 30 days. It cost me an extra £75 in 2006-07 (foal was born April 2007)

Hi I know that this is an old thread, but looking into foaling extensions. A few years ago when I bred from my mare I took cover out with the NFU to cover her and the foal should anything go wrong. Sadly the foal died and the NFU did "cough up". She is in foal again and I called my local office to take out the cover again. I have been told that the cover only covers the foal if it dies or is born dead after 300days. I am sure that last time the cover included vets fees for both mare and foal until the foal reached the critical 30days when it can have it's own insurance. Is anyone aware of any current insurance company that will cover the foal from birth to 30days under the mare's insurance?

Thank you :)

When I lived in the UK NFU told me they would insure for loss of foal but perhaps this has changed.

I insure with Carriage House but don't bother with foals now as they only insure for covering fees and we use our own stallions. We are able to insure yearlings.

I'm with SEIB and when Roo was pregnant they said they did something where they covered foal as well etc (for an extra cost) up until the foal was 30 days

Ooo thanks Nutmeg, I will look into that. NFU used to cover foals too, but now apparently have changed to only cover the death of the foal, not vets fees.
