I would like to know peoples experiences with returning Broodmares to work, specificaly ex racehorses if possible.
I have bought a lovely 10 year old mare who raced as a 2 year old and then (it appears) has been a broodmare since she was 3 year old, her last foal being in 2011. She has a lovely calm temperaament and is quiet to ride (previous owner / breeder has been riding her for the last 2 months and she appears to be of a nice calm nature and easy to do).
She needs some TLC which I can offer her, but I also think she would make a super little happy hacker for myself if I can bring her back into work nice and slowly over the next few months.
I'm trying to trace her history but as she was born and raced in Germany before coming to the UK at 3 when she became a broodmare, it's proving a little tricky. I really want to know if she retired from racing due to injury, temperament or for any other reason before I take the plunge and spend the year working with her. She will be with me for ever now so either way it's okay
