after looking at the broodmare for sale >>>
and deciding i could probs afford to buy that but not keep it.
what do you look for when buying a broodmare etc

just curious now :P

We/I look at Bloodlines, performance of close relatives, how the mare is compared to what we want to breed but most importantly Action and confo. and how this will probably pass on. Also look at previous foals records, if there are any...
 
Breeding, conformation, manners and temprement, competition record.
A mare needs to excel in all areas to warrant being bred from IMO, and needs to have a legitimate reason for become a brood, not a hereditory problem, a rank temprement or lack of talent.

Decide what type of animal you want to breed first, such as cob, dessage, showjumper etc, what you want to end up with depends a lot on what you look for but always keep temperament and confirmation at the top, the if a sportshorse breeding, competition record may come into it.
I have 10 broodmares , all good breeding, bought very economically, a couple have scars from injuries,one was kicked, and due to this have paid realistic prices for them, most are ridden.their breeding includes, Primitive Rising,Beat All, Overbury,Criminal Law,Terimon, then I have Lipizzaner, Irish Draught and a cob mare who produces total babes,
Check out auctions, if it is a TB you are after, then the Ascot, Cheltenham, and Doncaster bloodstock sales are a great source of breeding stock.the fillies and mares go for around £300 to £500.
Please also most importantly don't forget if it is a private buy, consider having the EVA and CEM swabs done !!, you wouldn't want your dreams going down the pan after a positive result

unfortunately i spoke to mun and she said funds at the minute are not high enough to take on a breeding project, but she did say if we find somewhere to buy with our own land then i can go and buy a mare
