Hi guys. I'm in need of advice regarding in-hand showing. Basically I'm hearing conflicting opinions regarding use of a coloured brow band for showing. We have a 13hh Dartmoor X Riding Pony and we want to show him in-hand as a show/riding pony rather than native breed classes. Coloured brow band or plain? Thanks :)

Velvet if he really is of riding pony type although with that breeding I would expect him to be more of hunter pony type which would need a plain one, see what the feedback is like from the judges as you can always change if he matures to be a bit too chunky to show as a show pony.

A photo would make it easier to advise as it may be he is different things to different people, hence the conflicting advice.

Thanks, this is our pony. He's now 10 and has been shown in the past but only once since he's been with us. We've had him for the last 5 years

What a nice-looking pony. I can definitely see him in the riding pony class. Following bp's advice, you can go for a velvet brow band and aren't limited to plain.

Thanks you Nici, we love him to bits. and thanks for the advice guys. So the other question is, are we limited to any specific colour of brow band? Someone said in certain classes it has to have red in it. Or are they talking crap? lol

You need a colour that suits both the pony and compliments the riders jacket IMO - a lot of velvet browbands come with red in them but any colour combination you need is out there

red is the favorite as it looks best on most ponies. Burghundy is also popular.
Steer clear of pink, black or green, only tiny tots on leadrein ponies can get away with pink and some judges think green is unlucky (superstition, not sure where it comes from) which whilst it wont figure into your placing doesnt help your first impression.

If your horse has very little to no white on thier face, then white or cream in your browband can help lift the head and make it look better. If your horse has a lot of white on thier face then steer clear of white or cream as it can make either the head or the browband look filthy.

Black can look very harsh on the head and a bit funeral like.

I personaly love my burgundy and gold browbands with either cream or navy highlights depending on the horses head.

Also pick your width carefully, too thin and it can make the horses head look common, too thick and they over whelm the head.

Burgundy & gold is a lovely idea conniegirl, should look nice against the bay and show up enough.

Personally not a fan of red at all, I always think it's a bit brash, but it's very popular and I'm not a judge!

It does look stunning on a bay, I used to have a bright bay show pony that I used it on as well.
