Yep... Grace has had her light weight one on all day and when I went up at 4pm she wasn't even warm underneath

So, she is now all tucked up in her brand new medium weight stable rug (which is lilac and purple and looks great on her

lol poppys fine out in the cold burn those calories, beckys cosy in her rug. its me i'm worried about its bloomin baltic but then again i'm always cold lol!!

mine came in tonight for the first time - after the horrendous weather last nite and feeling very mean turning them out even with big rugs and necks on, i hastily ordered some straw and hay, it arrived this afternoon, so they are in all tucked up with huge straw beds and rugs on, feel much less guilty now wen im tucked up in bed with hot water bottle lol

blimey its not even got cold yet folks! we are only on the fleecy's, need to save the bigger ones until it really really gets cold!! or am I hard mother!

We have big open fronted pens, so like being out, absolutely NO protection from the elements, and I am usually VERY hard, but as I was cold tonight, and freezing last night, I thought I would up the ruggage (plus I would love to stretch not clipping for a couple more weeks yet

Merlin out and naked, felt warm enough tonight, and I was cold.... so hopefully the fat and the fuel (good grass still) is keeping him toasty.

dont want to put his new rambo duo on without the liner coz it will get all greasy... dont want to bath him as he will just get greasy again and needs to be waterproof... dont want to put a lightweight on as its not raining and i think it just stops the coat from being able to lift up and trap warm air..... which is correct????

Pony is in with fleece on, but trying to keep the winter coat to the bare minimum so I can keep working him. Hope the vets have tucked Jerry up in his fleece, will probably stick his lightwieght stable rug on when he comes home, as he has had most of his back and sides clipped out for scanning poor thing

Mine too!!!!

What are their fur coats for???????

If it was a pig would you be putting a rug on it? No!!! And a horse has more fur than a pig, for goodness sake, stop molly coddling them all!!!!

Now if it was windy and raining and my girlie was shivering then of course she would be rugged up, in with the radiator on!. But my roughie toughie boys wont have their rugs on till Oct/Nov!!!!! Mind you thats because I want them to have a good coat!

Welsh cob is happy and still out rugless. Anglo is out in his lw 24/7 now, and have doubled his feed. He's gone back to his plump shiny perky self thankfully, touchwood he stay that way.

Ohhhhhhh, sorry everyone, but I don't miss this at all. Mine would be clipped out and rugged in the UK too so I'd be in the same boat.

*whispers*
Almost 5.30pm here, 22C, sun is shining, light breeze, bloody mosquitos have come out of hiding and I'm cowering inside, apparently I have a sign with "EAT ME" over my head

My horse is naked and woolly! But then she is having the winter off! And she's fat... plenty of insulation...
I, however, am fully clothed (outdoor coat, scarf and gloves too) and am still freeeeeeeeezing! But then we have no roof at the moment, and if you walk down the hall it literally leads to the front drive. So there's a bit of a breeze through the house from above and below! Brrrrrr!

I am undecided what to do with mine!
I do prefer them to be tough, and Phantom never had a rug for the first two years as a baby, he is quite a tough lad.
When I did rug him it just a lightweight throughout the winter and nothing more.
However, Herbie shakes at the mere hint of rain, he is such a wuss!
He is geting a bit of fluff now, but I don't think he is going to be thick coated. I am umming and ahhing about rugs....
They are out 24/7 x 52, not sure how Herbie was maintained, if he was in stable at night or winter etc. Phantom is a hardy Arab and doesn't mind any weather.
I just don't know what to do!
Magic is a toughie too, she gets a nice thick coat and is a Newfie so can leave her as late as possible.
Having just got Herbie looking good, would hate for him to drop off again.. gah! he is such a plum of a horse...

Personally would rug the one that feels the cold, you can always layer them and take them off you just have to watch the weather. One thing that does annoy me about spring and autumn is the change, like freezing at night but warm in the day, cold one day but not the next etc drives me nuts!

Rugging is a pain at the moment! My mare is clipped all year round, she is turned out 24/7 at the moment, as her legs fill when stabled, so will stable her when it really gets cold, and muddy. At the moment she's got her medium weight on at night and during the day, it depends on weather forecast! Of course sometimes its HOT and sometimes chilly. So during day it's either naked, fly mesh rug, or lightweight...just wish if it turns chilly it stays chilly, then she can have medium weight on all the time, but when sun comes out it gets too hot!!!
My life revolves round the weather forecast and whether I have to go to yard before work to do rugs changes!

Lol ours are all unrugged and out 24/7 at the moment! We are in the process of finishing new stables for them this winter, and don't yet have any straw so they couldn't come in even if they wanted to! Rugs are inaccessable as they are through a door behind a small haystack.... so will have to move all that hay in a couple of weeks!

I'm also undecided. I love making them all cosy and warm but as it lks like they'll be out for most of this winter i' was thinking about leaving it for a while.

Not like me at all!

But then, they'll be really fluffy and hard to work without sweating too much, so will need clipping, and then they'll need rugging, and then, oh, it's just so complicated!!
