on new years eve my horse was hopping lame on near fore, didnt know what it as no heat but swollen up to knee, so on advice rested him. alos rang my farrier who suggested same.,The next morning there was pus coming out on the front of the cornet band(ie;hairline about hoof!)

farrier was out and said to wash with warm water and epsom salts, polticed twice daily for 4 days. Last night i removed the poltice and hardly any pus so decided to just wash in waem salty water and leave off. This morning did same and its drying nicely but should i put anything on it to help healing or just let it open and dry? hes in and is being kept totally clean - is that enough? hes not sound yet but much better and still some swelling but a bit of walking today around yard helped a lot. Has anyone had any experience with this? would be really grateful for some advice as dont want it getting infected.

Your horse has had an abcess that has burst on its own. They often work their way upwards & burst at that point as there is no escape for the pus otherwise. Sometimes they need to be drained from the sole by vet or farrier . You could put some purple spray on it, but sounds as if you're keeping it clean.

agree with the above! it was an abcess. if the lameness doesnt go i would get your vet or farrier out to put hoof tester on to see if it needs digging out from the sole of the foot.

Had this problem get vet for antibiotics and poultic for a couple days more. I know this sounds stupid but buy the bigger size baby pampers or what ever and tape round hoof, fetlock joint to keep corent band clean, if his leg is going down but still warm there's still pus there.

Hi,johnrobert
his leg has no heat- should i still do antibiotics? were they antibiotic creams or systemic(iv injections) yours had?
good idea with the pampers someone said that to me today but then I thought I didnt need coverage anymore.
thank you

so is a 'bruise' the same as an abscess??!

a bit confused, as i know when a horse gets a bruised foot theres a built up of pus and it either comes out the top or bottom of foot- am i right in thinking this?

an abcess is from a foreign object that has got into the foot causing a build up of pus that causes lameness. a bruise is what it says. eg they have stood on a stone and bruised the sole of there foot. keep wet polticing the foot for a few days. you want a black gunk to come out. get the vet or farrier back out to put hoof testers on there to see if the abcess has gone, you need to keep the wound covered up or dirt will get in and you will be back to square one.

if pus has come out then its an abscess.
Within the hoof it has 2 routes of escape, out the sole or out the top at the coronet band. Yours chose the upper obviously.

If a wet poultice (I assume this is what you have been using?) has been good for the past 4 days Id maybe do 2 days with a dry poultice if possible just to draw out any last bits of pus and if not any then it just keeps the wound clean and dry for healing.
so long as it remains clean it will heal on its own. Once you feel your horse is weight bearing normally again, get the farrier or vet out (your choice) to have the foot examined (as others said with hoof testers etc) to assess whether there is a) still a lot of the abscess still in there and b) whether more of an investigation needs doing or whether you sorted it.

Regarding bruising = abscess.
Normally an abscess will come with subsequent bruising as it is often due to a foreign object in the foot. Therefore it had to get in there some how, hence causing damage to the foot structures leading to bruising.
But a bruise does not always = an abscess. Shallow footed horses can get bruised soles from walking on stony ground which can make them go lame and have bruised soles but no abscess.

That make sense?

Inner wall abscess - blows out at coronary band
Solar abscess - blows out at bulbs of heels.

Will always blow out at path of least resistance i.e. the softess area of tissue hence the above
