Bought my gelding in from the field, very lame with a very clear glowing-red bruised area on the bulb of his heel, on a fore leg.

He is known to over-reach, so it may well be just a bad bruise.

Is it possible that this is - or could turn into - an abscess?

Any advice on how to treat it please?

called the vet and farrier, both say its probably an abscess so i'm off to poultice it shortly, then farrier coming in the morning to possibly relieve the pressure, poor pony! x

Mine came in like this last night and is lame in trot only, i think she has over-reached and it is a bruise so treating with arnica and witch hazel gel but if no better in a couple of days will be phoning the vet.

hmm, if he gets better slowly then its probably just a bruise, if it gets worse then it's probably an abscess (possibly related to the bruise)

I'd recommend calling your farrier first if you have a good one? they know your horse's feet so much better already, and are much quicker at finding foot stuff generally than the vet!

mine located the abscess quickly and bless him only charged me £20 for a weekend call out too!
