I have a 18'2 Irish draught and I have found that his hooves easily bruise to the point that he is lame despite being shod. When he has not had shoes on his feet are really brittle. Is there anything that I can do or feed him to help

Hi,
When I got our Welsh cob her feet were dreadful. After two years of regular trimming, plus Formula 4 Feet and Hoof Moist on the feet once a day, things are really looking good. Her feet are transformed.

The F4F gives them a great coat shine too.

Horses that feet bruise easily are likely to have low grade laminitis. LGL is insulin resistance that can cause footyness and bruising, so i would be looking at diet. What is the diet like? You want to check how much sugar is in her diet, and how rich the grazing is. Perhaps try taking her off anything mollased for a few months and see if the bruising and lameness improve. Are you doing much roadwork? Concusion on a shod hoof is quite sever and can cause bruising also, but i would think the culprit would be diet. Obviously its hard to say for sure without seeing the horse, but looking into diet would be a good starting point, then look at how he is shod also.
