My cob was limping slightly today when I took him out of his stall and was quite stiff but once he started walking he seemed to loosen up a little. He seemed worse on slopes. Ive been told it’s a bruised hoof and I’m certain that’s right (he was playing out in the field last night and the ground his hard as it has rained in a while). I’m wondering how long it will take to heal up. He was quick to tell me something was up (he picked up his injured hoof more easily than usual and was quite while I picked out his feet). He’s never gone lame in the year I’ve had him so it as quite a shock. He’s being kept in tonight instead of going out as usual. I’m not sure how long it will take to heal so I’m just wondering.

Doesn't sound like a bruised sole to me! not if he managed to get better after walking it off and it it was worse on hills! i would have thought he might have tweaked something if he was playing on the hard ground! keep an eye on him, feel for any heat in that leg and if not right in a few days call the vet! check his digital pulse as he could also be brewing an abscess

He was still limping after moving about for a bit it just looked like he was managing the pain a little better but I don’t know

The yard manager who I trust with this diagnosis because he has never gone lame before to my knowledge and came in this morning with a few missing clumps of hair clearly from a bit or rough and tumble out in the field. His herd is usually quite well tempered so I think it was just because of the heat or just playing rough. It’s also been dry for about six weeks so the ground is hard and his pasture is very dry atm.

After a bit of rough and tumble in the field it could be anything and a yard manager however experienced is neither equipped or qualified to diagnose they are just guessing with minimal information. The fact that a horse has never been lame before isn’t really relevant, lots of horses have not been lame before injuring themselves.

If it is bruising it can be very deep and take quite a long time to resolve but it could equally be a developing abscess, or a pulled ligament/tendon.

I really would advise you get the Vet to give you a proper diagnosis and pain relief if appropriate.
