Hi, I'm normally just a lurker, but I need some advice regarding my daughters pony.
Taking the bridle off today she pulled back and has bruised her mouth. What is the proceedure regarding this? Should I give her arnica and any ideas on how long will it be before she can use a bit again?
Sorry if these are stupid questions but am a newbie to all things horsey, but obviously want to do whats right for Chance.
Thanks

Hi! Think that arnica won't do any harm. Mouths heal very quickly and perhaps just take it day by day to see if the bruising goes away.

I would just leave her for 4/5 days and then use a bridle again but lead her around or lunge before you put your daughter on board. Better to be safe than sorry and if your pony is sore it can only tell you by its behaviour, which may not be very safe with a child if it involves running off or jumping about.
Bruising on the bars of the mouth may take longer because there is just a small amount of gum overlying the bone and bruised bone will be much more painful.

Hi everyone, thanks for your replies and your advice. She looks a lot better today, and has spent the day enjoying the sun!

I use toothpaste on any mouth damage.

It dries it up and reduces the bruising, plus they aren't too offended by the taste. If they split though remember that it stings a little!!

I don't know why it does the above, it's an old school trick that I was told and sometimes these are the most effective!
