From the photos the soles look a bit carved to me but I might be seeing lines that aren't really there because they have been poulticed and wrapped. The discolouration in the nail hole region I wouldnt' immediately see as bruising necessarily but in picture 2 and 4 it looks like there is bruising in the white line at the toe to me which would fit with the sub clinical/low grade lami theory (I was going to ask re. cushings testing too but thought he had at least been done some time ago).

Theoretically I do think they should be pretty good pads, but we all know they don't always read the handbook.
The sole is carved because that's the vet hacking away at it on Sunday morning to expose the abscess. She said she couldn't go much further as there is a danger of exposing the bone of the foot as the sole is thin although rock hard if that makes sense.

Yes, cushings test done about three weeks ago now (or thereabouts) in the low 20's I think the vet said, anyway deffo no issue according to the vet.

The last abscess about 18 months ago was on the outside of the foot again on a nail hole so very similar to this one.

What kind of packing goes between the pad and sole?

often it is the packing which causes problem as it can cause a pressure point, especially if the soles are thin. Like how walking around with sand in your socks can can discomfort in your arches (I don’t know if you’ve ever walked on a beach with socks on, but this was the best comparison I could come up with - sorry!)

If the horse has thin soles, I would say that the vet has probably been a bit over zealous trying to find an abscess pocket, and that is only going to compound things.

‘’I hope your horse is feeling better soon.
