Bruised sole help a little long sorry

Out hacking last week I noticed about a 100m down the road that we were lame . So jumped off and walked back , I trotted him up and was very sore in front I called the farrier and he came the next day to have a look he suspected either an abscess or bruised sole . I was advised to polticed and see if any thing came out . 3 days later Nothing at all . Farrier returned and did a little digging and all he could find was a area of blood ( he did't dig deep ) this was just by the first nail and his inside fore . Next day had to call the vet out as was extremely lame again she did some digging and found the same so advised polticed and bute ! Me at this point am getting very frustrated . 5 days down the line he is still sore but think is more foot sore as not used to having no shoe on . He is pretty much sound on the soft and fine on hard with barrier boot on he has also go a swelling on the inside of his leg on the tendon area I presume this is from walking funny .

Has anyone else has problems with bruised sole ? Did you have any swollen legs with it ?
How long has it took to heal ?

Forgot to say he had been shod 2 days before he went lame

Could it be nail bind? I'll admit I don't know too much about it, but from what I know this sounds similar. Hopefully some more experienced people will be along shortly to advise!
 
Nail bind is a possibility. Especially if just after shoeing. Was the blood actually bleeding or blood in the foot like a bruise (kind of in the sole?) If they dig into the foot will always find blood if they go far enough and that really isn't very far at all.

Could still be an abscess as the lameness can go up and down before they come out and poulticing does not always bring them out, they come out when they are good and ready.

If it is a bruise the initial pain goes away quickly, but the residual lameness can continue for up to a month or so. My girl has had a couple and they took her a while to heel. It is also dependent on how 'sensitive' your horse is. My girl is very sensitive so stays lame for longer than some less sensitive types do.

Having said all of this I would be concerned about the swelling. This is not normal for a bruised sole or for going barefoot for a few days. What it might be is an abscess tracking. Is there heat in the swelling? and was it there to start with? The other thing to check for a digital pulse. This would indicate the likelihood of an abscess.

Hi he is not a sensitive type at all the swelling wasn't there to start with and is still there a little today farrier is coming to day to hopefully put shoe back on . He is normally sore if has shoes off on hard well gravel but is now sound on soft and with boot on on hard there is no digital pulse at all

My horse has been lame a month now with a suspected bruised sole, been in for X-rays but nothing showed up :( he's been on box rest and is not as hopping lame as he was but still not sound. Getting really fed up!!
 
Mine bruised his sole, little red spots visible, no heat but hopping lame. Thought abscess but the farrier and vet dug and found nothing. It took two weeks for him to be less lame and I was seriously worried as he's not sound on the offside due to an arthritic hock.

The sole was springy, I could move it and I think being barefoot was not helpful. He was shod on his fronts and this seemed to resolve the problem overnight. I'm using Keratex twice weekly now to harden the soles. X rays would have been my next move.
 
I've had a horse who got a swollen leg with nail bind. Normally though once the shoe and nail is removed the lameness resolved itself. This however was the whole of the lower leg and not an isolated spot on the tendon.

One of my current horses gets a very swollen leg (think blown tendon) if he gets an abscess. He was lame on and off nearly all year last year with no swelling in his legs. Umpteen x-rays and vets visits later we think he 'just' had deep bruising to his feet. Box rest, a change of field and different front shoes later he has been sound for some months now - but did go lame when walking over frozen, rutty ground in the gateways.

Hope you get to the bottom of your boy's lameness. The localised swelling would concern me.
 
Mine used to get bruised soles a lot! I turned her away when she had one and gave her bute. Within a week she was sound again. However after following Oberon (member on here) feed advice my Horse hasn't had a bruised sole since. Shes very sensitive to sugar and that made her soles weak. Since changing to a sugar free feed i've seen a huge difference. So maybe worth PM'ing Oberon and seeing if she can give you any advice on feed :)
 
Whereabouts is the swelling on the leg? One of mine went lame a bit like yours with a swelling under the knee running down towards what we thought was the affected foot. Turns out it was a strained median ligament. Box rest and bute to relieve the pain did the trick, but it took a long time.
 
As Laurenbay has pointed out, soft soles are often down to diet. They can also be caused by underlying metabolic issues or both.
 
Many thanks everyone swelling seams to have gone down and seams a lot better now shoe back on farrier has set his nails low will trot up in the morning fingers cross will be sound was ok coming in today . my farrier says his sole is a lot harder than it was last week.
he is on a very low suger dite as he can get very jolly sometimes resulting is being very spookey (safer option while being ridden )

hope he is ok and can bring back in to work over the weekend . if not will be another call out of the vet :S
