I posted at the start of the week about my horse going lame and having a potential abscess well vet came out again today as I was sure where the pain was not much was coming out. Well he dug it slightly and made a small hole and it poured with blood yuk!
Horse seemed much better and I poulticed, ive been told to only poultice tomorrow now as his foot is getting soft then dry poultice all weekend but continue to hot tub with the epsom salts.
When would you expect to see a big improvement by? he is still very sore but actually walking better. Also he is meant to be being shod Monday and I want to have the gel pads but in (the oned you inject then dry) to prevent this happening again. How long will the hole take to heel and I can have this done?

Any advice gratefully received!! Thanks

A hole in the hoof can take a while to heal. My pony got a bit of wood stuck in his foot that had to be removed by surgery and it took about 3 months for the hole to heal up and he was VERY sore on it for a while. Obviously, that was quite a big hole so maybe yours wont take as long, but the main thing is to be really careful about keeping it clean as you really dont want it to get infected.

What colour was the blood..? a bruised sole is diffrent to an abcess. Bruising can take a couple of weeks to become sound again, dependant on the bruise.

The hole will be fine to be shod and have the gel pads on as long as it has started to heal and it is cleaned well.

If it was my own horse, I would be tempted to leave the shoeing for a weeks or so.

The blood looked relitevely fresh, it was a little browny to start then quite red it has gone all squidgey around the hole where it has spread slightly. The hole is literally as big as the tip of my finger so quite small. I guess if he is alot sounder by Monday ill have him shod if not maybe ill wait till the end of the week

If the blood had been a funny cleary dirty colour it would have suggested an abcess.
This does sound like a bruise if im honest.
How lame was he?
Ask your farrier otherwise. He will say yay or nay!

Yes it was bruising, he was hopping lame but is walking alot better now on the concrete.
Yes I will call farrier tomorrow and see what he says, he is out to trim my youngster anyway Monday so he can see him and see what he thinks, Ive just seen the keratex hoof putty stuff maybe I could plug it with this next week after a shoe has gone on. A shoe woudnt interfere with the hole.

I just cant tell how sound he is without a shoe as he has such flat feet and is sore without a shoe anyway!

My mare has recently recovered from bruised frog think she stood on flint it took 2 weeks with restricted turnout and stabling. My gelding stood on 4 inch nail few years ago and punctured his sole both are flat footed tbs.The geldings injury was fairly good after 2 weeks the vet dug out surrounding area and I used stockholm tar over wound as I just couldnt keep poultice in place. He also had dose of antibiotics as nail was very rusty.
