Hey guys, does anyone know how long it usually takes bruised soles to heal? My guy has now been lame for 7 wks (xrays and nerve blocks led to diagnosis) and my farrier was back out last week and says still lots of bruising and possible corn but it just seems like an awful long time to me!!
Do you think there could be something else going on as well? Reluctant to phone the vet back out as already xrayed and blocked and i'm worried they will start poking needles into joints

can take ages if its deep, my boy was on boxrest for 5 months last winter because of bruised soles (other things too, but the bruising was the one that took the longest to come right)

Crikey!! My boy is turned out (on advice of vet) do you think that will slow the healing process? Did you tub/use arnica or anything? Anything you can recommend? (asked in a hopefull tone of voice!!)

we had a lightweight pony with bruised soles ,boxed on shavings with arnica tabs in feed for 4-5weeks ,i supose its ok to put them out if the ground is SOFT and no charging about, your farrier will be able to tell when he cuts away the hoof if there is still bruising there ,be patient its the quickest wayin the long-run.we also poulticed his feetfor a few days after the blacksmith had been .

I spent six months battling against bruised soles last summer. My TB has paper thin soles and low lying pedal bones meaning he bruises easily. I tend to box rest him until he is sound in hand and then turn out for another couple of weeks before trying him ridden. He now has silicone pads under his shoes and has not had a bruised sole in a year. Very expensive but better than spending half the year off work. Like you I had x-rays done because the vets couldn't believe it was only bruised soles but xrays showed nothing.

Hey guys thanks for your replies. I'd prefer not to box rest if all possible - he literally goes crazy so walking out in hand is not an option and it seems such a shame to keep him locked up all summer! He doesnt tend to run about too much, out 24/7 so much more concerned with his stomach lol. My farrier didnt put pads on - i wonder if that is an option. Also. do you think its worth getting the advice of a second farrier?

Equi-pac, excellent - will need to write that down! Expensive might well be worth it, hate to see him limping along

Actually i'm making it sound worse than it is and making myself look like very cruel owner for turning him out! He's reasonably sound in walk, 1 or 2 out of 10 lame in trot. Not sound though grrr!!!

My cob was off practically all last summer with bruised soles. He has always been barefoot but eventually I put front shoes on with silicone just to give his feet time to recover. If its deep-seated bruising it can take a long time

When the ground softened in winter I took them off. He has been barefoot again ever since but I use hoof boots now when I hack just in case !

Its such a bummer

Just finished up at uni and was looking forward to a nice summer of hacking - no such luck sob sob! did you do anything 'special' to help it heal faster? What do you reckon about the magnetic hoof boots?
Thanks

P.S do you know if insurance non-vets fees covers the silicone pads?

saddlesore - sadly insurance doesn't cover the pads (unless you have some miracle insurance in which case please let me know who you are with)! I'd definitely say pads are worth a go even if you only use them whilst the bruise heals.

arinca tablets all the way that will help bring bruises out quiker dont put them in food tho or other wise they will not work just push them into his mouth they a tiny tablets so you will not have any probsQ!
