Hoping for some recommendations of boots for my mare as I need a full set for flatwork. She’s a cob x wb so has reasonable bone but I find that anything with binding rubs her – so that’s normal Woof / Premier Equine etc out of the window :(

At the moment I’m using NEW fleece lined tendon boots and Eskadron fetlock boots while the rubbed hair recovers. The fetlock boots are hopeless and get all full of sand. The tendon boots are fine sand-wise but I’m paranoid about the potential heating effect. Perhaps I’m over stressing because her legs are never hot underneath them – it seems a more ‘open’ fleece than the likes of Clarendons.

Anyway, thought I’d ask in case I’ve missed any others – need to be budget-friendly as I need 2 pairs! :p

I really like the Premier Equine Air Cooled Kevlar Brushing Boots.
They don't cause the legs to heat up, are lightweight but very strong and I've not found that they hold in the sand/mud. They don't hold water either so are quick to dry

I would definitely buy them again

What about the woof wear wraps, rather than brushing boots. I've found them quite handy to have around and mine have done quite well - abuse wise ;)

Otherwise bandages? Think of all the matchy matchy you can do with bandages ;) ;)

thanks both, I'll look into those :) had wondered about the woof wraps, I think I'll need to look at them in the flesh to find out if they will fit her legs (short and wide!)

tbh my owner paranoia won't cope with bandages, I feel competent to do stable bandages but would be terrified that they would come undone while we were going round the school

What about the equilibrium stretch and flex boots? Used them lots end they don't rub or let anything under them.

The stretch and flex have quite a bit of binding around them though don't they? I was thinking of those but thought they are bound round the edges

The WW wraps are pretty good for going on any legs as the Velcro just sticks anywhere on the outside of the wraps. I've had my full size ones on our little 13h pony with dinky legs, and also on a 16.3 WB with tree trunk legs lol

Bandages aren't that bad - the secret is finding bandages that you like using. It makes a real difference. Personally I don't like bandages that are too wide. Long bandages I can deal with but wide ones just don't go on right. And then keep practicing ;). And all the pretty colours.... ;) ;)

I used to have some stomatex brushing boots for H (the stuff that the stretch and flex boots are made of but without the seams/binding). It's good stuff so if your pone will tolerate the binding on the stretch and flexes then that may be worth a try.

We've also had some success with little felt polo wraps.

In the end we gave up on boots with ultra-sensitive Spud as they caused more hassle than they cured. H does brush a little at the fetlock so I ended up putting just plain woof wear fetlock boots on him if we were going to be doing a lot of cantering - he seemed to be able to tolerate them even though they weren't fleece lined or anything. He's not doing enough work to warrant them now so again we don't boot.

With the NEW fleece boots that you are using at the moment, they shouldn't heat the legs. Basically, the fleece that is used in them is an "orthapedic" fleece, designed to support the leg, but also because of the way that the fibres are aligned allows air to move (to an extent) between the fleece fibres.

(P.S. I'm biased, I work for NEW so I've seen all the manufacture and design etc!!)

Edit to add: NEW do a Brushing Boot 'Lite' that doesn't have binding but is just a foam lining.
