Brought my mare in last night to ride, got on her walking fine as soon as I asked her to trot she was lame. Got off and had a look at her foot, found heat in her hoof and when I looked one of the bulbs on her heel was hot and squashy and red in colour under the skin (no wound). I suspect she has over-reached, she has over-reach boots on for turnout as she is prone to doing that, but they were having a hoolie yesterday and I think the boots have saved her cutting herself but she must have had that much force it caused bruising. I applied arnica and witch hazel gel and turned her back out and asked YO to do the same this morning and hopefully she will be ok in a few days.

Has this happened to anyone else and is there any complications I need to look out for. Normally she takes a small chunck of bark off and isnt lame, but this time no wound and lame, typical!!

My horse is prone to doing the same thing - although he is such a wimp, last time we had to x-ray him, to make sure nothing was broken as he was literally unable to move and apart from a tiny bit of heat and swelling, we couldn't find any reason for such pronounced lameness (it had taken 30 minutes to walk him in from a field literally 800 metres away, he was non-weight bearing, was sweating nicely and generally had the reaction of a horse with a broken bone). Muppet.

Que an emergency out of hours bank holiday vet visit - he just had IV painkillers and I BR him for a few days, until he believed he could walk again :D

Thankfully, yours sounds much tougher than my horse is - I hope she gets better soon!

I dont know about that lol she is a wimpy TB mare who usually feels sorry for herself, she had her annual injection last week and stood at the back of her stable for 2 hours and every time she saw me she put her head and neck to the side as though to say 'my poor neck'!!!!

She is walking fine its just in trot, but there is heat and soreness there so hopefully its just bruising. The trouble is she is the leader of the pack and it ends up when one of them gets excited she joins in and it ends up a full on stampede around the field!!
