Brussel Sprouts

Are they ok for horses occasionally? I’ve hung a stick of brussels in my boy’s stable today for something for him to do and then someone on facebook has just said it can cause colic so now sat here panicking!

He didn’t seem in the slightest bit interested in it and it’s been in there all afternoon so I very much doubt he will eat it anyway but is it that bad for them? Do I need to remove it?

Too many causes too much gas, potentially colic to follow.
Just 2 or 3 as a treat is ok imho.

That said, I'm sure some will pop along and say their horses are fine with a branch of them.

Basically, anything that would give you, er, wind, is best avoided for horses.

I’ve taken it out! Joys of having them outside the back door! I wouldn’t sleep tonight else with worry. Got down there and it was gone and I thought oh no he’s eaten it - then spotted that he had just chucked it on the floor.

I imagine it would take quite a few to be a worry. I wouldnt have lost sleep over it.

Mine love a courgette. No idea if they are meant to have them. I figure one courgette vs 400kg of horse is bound to be fine

Probably - if he could have rolled his eyes at me earlier when he walked into his stable and saw it, then he would have!

I had a pony that loved the stem left when the brussels are removed - she would start at one end and pull it into her mouth like sucking up spaghetti.

One of mine loves the peeling bits off sprouts also cabbage. Cut up bits of stalk to small carrot size. She only has a few bits at a time.

Generally cruciferous vegetables are best avoided with horses, but a couple sprouts usually won't cause any problems.
If you want to hang something up as a treat, some branches of willow with the leaves attached is usually popular!
