BS clamp down on coloured jackets

I think that bright red should be banned, it used to be as was reserved for teams and on a personal level i think it looks awful , although i dont really think jacket colour is going to make any difference to the future od showjumping in britain which is what actually needs addressed!!!

I agree the bright pink, red (never my thing!) are not smart looking, but I really hate the funny slightly not white that many juniors have.

I don't however have an issue with technical fabrics etc- it is a sport, we like to tell everyone that left right and cebtre, so why not have advanced fabric made for the job?

And I can actually see the appeal of the JW jacket- quite a few local pros around here have them- for mid week shows, in winter why not? Again in summer when you can just whip it off back to strappy top. I don't think they are smart, but I do think highly functional and have a place.

Though could BS please address the issue of "ringers" before we poke around in people's fashion choice, which hardly counts as unsporting, or perhaps we could look at safety in warm ups, because again, the colour of a jacket hardly pre disposes an accident!

Although I can understand the frustration and annoyance from people who have purchased jackets which are now being banned, I actually think it's good that BS are enforcing their own rules, even if they do seem to be sorting out the trivial things before the things that actually do need attention.

Last time I jumped BS the steward smiled and said "Oooh, tweed, how funny" and it took all of me not to say "Oooh Vicky Pollard zip up, how chavvy".

I understand that the sport is moving into the 21st century and it's comfort over tradition and BS is at the forefront of cool, edgy designs but I'm not a fan of the JW stuff and whilst I think the jackets are great for training I don't think they look very smart to jump in.

Anyway, I'll stick to my tweed for my token annual BS outings... :)

Oh no I have just registered for BS for the first time and was planning on rocking my tweed!! Maybe I need to get on ebay and look for a pink cast off :p

Although this rule doesnt affect me personally, I do feel a bit sorry for people who have just splashed out on their expensive electric blue/pink jackets. I also feel sorry for companies who make the jackets, one imparticular, who actually do a lot for BS.

It has changed in to a fashion show lately, especially in the juniors, but I think its all part of the fun of it. Showjumping is the only discipline where you can add a spark of your own colour to your competing, apart from eventing xc colours of course, but wouldn't eventers be a bit miffed if they were told they can only wear navy, black or grey xc colours? No more coloured tape on their boots :D

Even though these bright jackets arent something I would go for personally I do think people look very smart when they get it right. Horses are also matchy matchy, its all about how smart you look as well as how well you jump and even though taking away the bright coloured jackets will not effect anyone getting a clear round it will dampen their mood IMO.

Keep the colours! :D:D

I tend to agree, it makes life more interesting and keeps Jacket companies in business with all of the latest trends.

Each to their own.

Oh......and I will still be donning my 18 year old tweed jacket when I go BS.

This is a very good point.
A lot of eventers (and SJers as well, to be fair) seem very "wouldn't be seen dead in anything other than black/navy/tweed" but are happy to gallop around in bright colours on a cross country course. I'm not sure why a bit of colour is so awful jumping in a ring but perfectly acceptable outside it!

I haven't managed to read all of this thread but has anyone else seen the latest edition of the British Showjumping magazine....in the 'on trend' section they have a picture and mini write up of the bright blue kingsland sj jacket.....giving the wrong message if they are also trying to enforce the rules I think! :)

Good points very well made :) :) Wouldn't be my thing, but why on earth BS feel the need to stop people personalising their appearance through piping and colours beats me and if it is partuclarly being embraced by the juniors surely we should be encouraging them and making them feel welcome not stamping down on their individuality? Spoken as an occasional BS-ing eventer who always wears navy...

I love my tweed jacket, I think the technical jackets are ok for more training shows. But the bigger more high profile shows like championships, they just look out of place.

Whilst I personally hate the bright colours (especially red - as a previous poster stated the right to wear a red jacket used to have to be earned) I agree that there are more important rules BS should be looking at enforcing. I for one am heartily sick of seeing BS judges and stewards ignoring blatent abuse of horses by riders misuse of spurs, and bits along with excessive whip use. I watched one eliminated rider give his horse several swipes after the bell, and leave the ring jabbing he horse with his spurs and yanking it in he mouth. When I saw the judge later I asked why nothing had been done and he looked at the ground and muttered that he hadn't seen anything untoward, but the truth of the matter is that no one wants the big fishes of the small ponds to be upset and take their custom elsewhere.

I like all the colour. I think it looks fun and makes the sport look modern. I would rather a jacket than just a polo shirt. We no longer wear stocks BS so why not the next move on?

Hear, hear. Not the red jacket part as I don't care what colour the rider is in, as long as the horse is treated kindly . I have seen some juniors using far too much whip & judges do nothing. & it was televised for all to see. Disgraceful
