Can somebody explain how the BS club jumping fence heights work please? If I enter an 80cm class for example do I expect it to start at 80 and then be a bit bigger in the second/ timed half of the course?

Mostly I’m just practicing for BE in the summer but I didn’t know if the BS stuff was a bit more full up than the comparable height BE classes where they start off with a few lower fences to ease you into it. Also it seems a lot more confusing now it’s single phase compared to the old days where you had a first round and a jump off.

It will be 2 holes, so 10cm bigger in the jump off section. Single phase means that even if you get faults in the first part of the course you continue on to do the jump off section. Two phase means that faults in the first part mean you don’t continue, they will ring the bell, if no faults or bell then continue to the jump off. It’s very rare to run a separate jump off except for bigger classes/qualifiers, this is called Table A7

Thanks for that. Everything is single phase nowadays in my area, whereas whereas when I was a kid (about 100 years ago) most classes had a separate jump off. I'm thinking about whether I might want to step up to the next level in BE this year but am worried if I enter the corresponding height in BS classes I'll feel a bit overfaced by the heights in the jump off section!

Tbh I always think that you should be comfortable jumping BS at the same height as BE. Personally I feel if I'm going to be galloping at solid fences then I want the height of them to be in my comfort rather than stretch zone - brushes can also add 10cm height to a jump and also there can be the added technicality of show jumping on an unflat grass ring.

My experience is that Club is always very kind and won’t be more than 1 hole bigger in jump off

Thanks, that's good to know.

Yes I know what you mean. I'm one of those people though that is much more comfortable with XC so I don't get so worried about those fences or things like hedges / additional brush height. I'm also as comfortable in a grass arena as on a surface due to having ridden on grass a lot in the past. It's show jumps themselves that sometimes give me the willies, always has been!
