I am looking for some advice on how to move up a level in BS(JA) having spent a long time at British Novice/Discovery level I am wanting to move up a level Discovery / 1.10. I have done a few 1.05 classes but have a real lack of confidence when in the warm up to jump anything big. Once in the ring and over the first fence I seem to settle down. My horse is more than capable of jumping beyond this.

I am looking for a bit of advice, I only have a field to jump in at home with no one really about to help me jump bigger at home, so question is do I go for more lessons or get out and get more competition practise??

Any advice on how to get my confidence up or is it a big kick up the bum for me, in the few 1.05 classes he either jumps clear or a odd pole down? but I owe that to him more than me.

Thanks for reading.:)

You should figure out what works for you. I think if he feels good when you're jumping the 1.05 then that should give you the confidence to have a crack at 1.10. If you have done 1.5 jump offs, bear in mind that they are 1.10, so you have already jumped that height.

In your situation, I'd go out and jump some more 1.05s until they look small and feel easy. Then you'll know that you are ready to move up. Go out to a show that's running 1.05 and 1.10, do the 1.05 first and then go for the 1.10. You don't sound as if you have any issues and so, whilst it is always best to have lessons as well as competing, I think that your confidence would increase if you went out and jumped some more rounds.

Thanks for your responses I am based near Maidstone.

I will look for some more 1.05 classes and stay jumping there a bit more. This is what happened with British Novice the fences started to look small which encouraged me to move up, The warm up can be so intimidating as you have the professionals taking over the practise fence and leaving them sky high, when your on your own it is hard to get the fence put back down which leaves me a little un prepared.

oh your not that far from me i have a brilliant BSJA coach who comes to mine once a month for training he is very good and gives you loads of confidence if your interested x

Hi, i am in your situation, although i may be a bit behind you in the fact that i havnt done any 1.05's yet. I get training from an accredited coach and she's amazing!!! I think its best to ask them because they know the BSJA so well!!

I only ended up in my first Discovery becuase i jumped badly in the BN and was a bit annoyed at myself. I went for it and jumped a double clear!! But, i knew i was ready and my horse is a cracker (in my opinion). Anyways, i would get training off a coach and ask thier opinion, and next time ur at a competiton, have a look at the newcomers course - ask yourself, have i done this at home? Will my horse find this too difficult? Would i feel confidednt around this course? How do i feel walking it? If you think you can do it - Go for it!!

Good Luck, Hope this helps!!

Yes I would be interested, where abouts are you?.

Good idea, prehaps I will walk a few newcomers courses and try and get a feel of them. In the meantime stick to my 1.05 and get some training in.

Thanks again

i'd also get to know your local centres and course builders...some build bigger than others so pick somewhere that builds small for your first newcomer for e.g. :)
