Would normally post this in CR but not many replies so decided to go here instead :)

We only aimed to do a 80cm clear round, which he did but not very stylishly! So we entered the 80cm warm up class and jumped absolutly foot perfect until the last fence which we got underneath a bit and the front pole went. We came 4th though!!! :D

I then decided to do the 90cm amatuer qualifier and he jumped amazingly even in the jump off when the jumps where 1m! He actually went better as the jumps got bigger so chuffed with him :)

2 weeks ago we got eliminated in an 80cm and today he was a different pony, its all of a sudden clicked with him.

Just need some advice though, I kept getting a bit deep into some of the oxers, luckily he managed to pick up but when we start jumping bigger it will become an issue, what exercises can I do to help this?

No pictures sorry my mum didn't bring the camera :(

Hiya well done, very good improvment!! Lots of gridwork, will get him picking up and sorting himself out when its wrong!!! You may also find as there oxers and appear bigger you might be chasing him into it a little and getting a bit flat, hence getting deep so keep back with you weight in your bum and hands up and you may find hhe doesnt get so deep!! :)

Thankyou, we do grids, quite regulary its really helped him :) I think I do chase the jumps a bit on him so I just got to remember to let the jump come to me :D

Yer that was my bad habit too, not sitting and waiting it will come though its a bit of a trust thing, and the more you do the easier waiting will come!! Keep the grids up though they always help. Im guessing you having lessons anyway, but even if there not as often as you like i used to get a friend who could jump pretty well to help (and i did the same back) as a pair of eyes on the ground even to say sit up dont chase ect. helps and makes you remember the smaller stuff that can really make a difference.
Well dont though you should be very proud. :D

Have lessons twice a week, but only one jumping :)
My mum is on the ground shouting the little things at me aswell when I'm not with an instructor, I'm very lucky she's supportive :)

Thankyou, I am hugely proud with him, we've also been asked to jump in the pc team which I wasn't even expecting until next year :D

How deep is deep? To oxers you want to get a good forward deep shot, to be able to make the distance when they are bigger and wider, just do some work getting a really strong canter with hocks well under, the only times I generally have an oxer is if he's on his forehand and jumps flat, or I'm a long way off at take off. Honestly, slightly deeper is where you want to be.

Oooh thats good all good experience and getting out often is good!!
Yer i had a good mum, she could ride but was too nervous to do the jumping stuff but could see when it was going wrong on the ground, so it does help. And 2 lessons a week is a good amount and its good to see a young person having flat work lessons aswell, its so important but so often gets forgotten about. :)

So deep you wonder how they manage not to fall over it :o

It was the front pole of the oxer, he rarely gets the back pole as he jumps everything to high and too wide.

lol, ah. I'd just work on the canter, getting hocks under but still forward. Bounces are good too, short ones and gridwork to get him to think about things himself a bit and back off slightly if deep. :) I do steep x poles, 2 bounces then one short stride (use 7 for my horse instead of 8) to a 1m+ parallel. He did the same to 1m wide 1.20 fence, my trainer made me, I was having kittens but she was proving the theory worked. I'd have been happy to have just taken her word for it........lol

Sounds like a good idea, I'm beginning to run out of ideas for grids :p
We do lots of pole work with him and hill work getting some more muscle tone as he is very weak, but once he's more muscled we'll be well away :)

Well done, sounds like you are doing great, were having fun same as you, we have a jumping lesson once a fortnight, then me and daughter practice in between, especially anything I am nervous of ;) we are getting too close on higher jumps, so put a pole in slightly in front to get him to take off earlier.

Sounds good, well done! If you work on getting a good canter and being able to keep it the same all the way to the fences, you'll be fine! I find I was having problems as I don't get a powerful enough canter to start with, so end up either on a long one or a short one as I've got no adjustability!!! :) Canter poles to an oxer will help you get the feeling of how much canter you need down to a fence :D

Well done!! I've been following your posts with interest as I like jumping too but recently had a real confidence issue. Sounds like you are back on track & have a lovely supportive team to help you. My bit of news to share is that I jumped a little grid in the field yesterday & rode well & with confidence, so am moving back up, hope to be out to a BS show next month, 2 months ago I was set to sell her & stop riding so its nice to hear that other people are solving their problems too. I agree its very cliquey in CR, clearly all potential olympians in there!!

Thank you, KatB I'll do that on wednesday and get my mum up to take some videos :)

Kizzywizz- well done for getting over your confidence wobbles :) I seem to be back on track but I don't think I'll ever be as confident as I used to be, but you never know with horses :D
