As title really :D

D1 has started jumping Grey Mare and if things continue to go well, they'll have a go at some low level BS.

So, how should the horse be turned out, other than clean with clean and fitting tack :D. Horse has a long mane, but D1 says she'll do a running plait (which I'm guessing is okay?).

I'm guessing that D1 will wear white breeches, long black boots, and a jacket - but does the jacket colour matter? She has a blue one, but is very keen on black and red :D

Oh, and do I have to mortgage the house to buy a flock of sheep to cover the horse in? :cool::eek::D

Im prob not the best to comment as im a poor excuse of a sjer as i lack bling and sheep :rolleyes: but i would say most things go. :D
Personally i would say black show jacket rather than red mainly because dirt shows up less and i think it looks smart, same with navy. There is a bit of a thing associated with red jackets which i can kind of go with but i also thing each to there own, its not hurting anyone.
As she is grey i think navy will look super smart thou.
White breeches are fine so are beige. Running plaits are ok as long as they are neat.
Clean saddlecloth, boots, etc as well.
I personally dont care what colour jackets or saddle cloths people wear as long as they are smart with it, hair neatly tied up, clean tack, no excessive mud that sort of thing.
I have been told that eventually the horse will disappear within the fluff and all competion should be blinded by bling so you will be garenteed to win :D I think that might be where i was going wrong :p :D

Lol :D

Ta hun :D

So, two sheep and the contents of one jewellers shop should do nicely? :D :D

D1 is keen on black and red, so if that's okay, saddlecloth and jacket will be black with red trim :D

I've seen a very neat running plait, so will go with that. Just didn't want to be the only one with a running plait :cool::eek::rolleyes:

Hmmm you might need 3 sheep if you want to have fluffy tendon and fetlock boots, just on the safe side. :D Cant help with bling as that really it not my thing!

Black with red trim will look smart as a jacket and saddle cloth, better if they match ;). I wouldnt worry about the running plait, better that than mane up the nose over a jump :rolleyes: :D
Your prob doing seniors so it wont be quite as jaw dropping as juniors :D

i only compete up to newcomers level, but i;d say that most things go.
i wear a navy jacket with a red trim and that's fine, i used to wear a burgundy but the buttons came off. i haven't seen a horse with a running plait showjumping, but a lot do plait up, so i think it would be fine.
i'm more likely to laugh at the person who's hogging the jump and wearing a kp jacket...

running plaits tend to come undone/stretch whilst jumping IMO so would just wet down the mane- is the mare native/iberian? and maybetuck the forelock under the browband if its long.

I tend to plait...only not plaited on the odd occasion we have had a 'Grandad Drama' as we were leaving - and I feel scruffy not doing so.

I wear navy, with a cream stock - usually the only one wearing a stock! Cream jods, and black long boots. Pony has a white, studbook numnah.

I might be considered boring though!!

Hm.

Mane is long... She's an IDxTB, but has quite a fine face - the long mane suits her and D1 really likes it, so trying to figure out how best to manage it :D

Liking the sounds of the outfits you guys are wearing. This is what we've got to so far...

Black jacket, with a red trim (and a small red rose on a pocket);

White breeches ('cos she has some lol);

Long (currently black!) hair, tied back;

Black hat;

Black tendon boots (possibly lined with sheep :D);

Black V shaped brow band, with a bit of bling on it :D

Black saddlecloth, with a red trim (and a small res rose on a the corner).

Cos we is eventers we stood out like a sore thumb;) The first time we went I, scrubbed, polished and plaited - never did that again :D K just wore her normal gear, so tweed jacket, tattersall check stock, beige jods and skull cap with navy silk, horse in plain black tack, white saddlecloth and hunting breastplate, tendon boots are tri-zone so not a dead sheep in site! Tbh, anything goes - as long as you are clean and smart.

i think you look absolutely smashing! there is nothing nicer than a grey turned out to a high standard and a proper cream stock! i love it when people like you make an effort at BS shows and we always go "aww doesnt she look lovely" - i bet you have an amazing collection of show pix! xx

I've gotten a running plait to stay put for a day's hunting, so it is possible. An alternative would be a lattice---though it can be annoying when the whole thing flaps at you as a unit when jumping---or a funky plait I saw online earlier, which had individual plaits like hunter plaits, except each plait was fed in a loop through its neighbour and then formed into a rosette. Looked like bunting at a party! That might be an alternative for a long mane; will see how it works on the pony when it's a bit drier and I have more patience.

Ah, hadn't thought of the 'flapping in face' of the lattice plait...

D2 is quite good at plaiting, so with practice should be able to get a running plait to stay put (mousse and Elnet any good?! :eek::rolleyes::D).

Can't imagine the other one that you describe. When you do one, take piccies and post them :D

Although the dress for the rider has changed over the years, it is still truly correct for horses other than natives to be plaited, if not plaited then the manes should be short and neat. I can't for the life of me understand why you would have an ID x TB with a long mane? Either pull it or hog it.

Do what all SJ'ers do - cut it short. Straight across, first, with sharp scissors, then chip into it vertically, all the way along. Supersmart, superquick and no awful (and frankly mean) ripping out at the roots.

Because she has a fine face and looks Arab/Spanish and the long mane suits her and that's what D1 likes :D

Happy to do a neat running plait :D

I am known within the studbook for always having immaculate ponies - they make a joke of it, and my Snuggy Jams, to keep ponies clean & polished!!!

I mean, the pic I posted annoys me because a) her tail got dirty and b) I didn't plait because of 'Grandad Drama'

I was boring and went for smart and black, black jacket, boots, saddle cloth, main and tail plated, beige jods and white shirt (and there was a black tie somewhere :o ) :)

Thanks :) I defo think apart from for XC (when we had black and blue) nice, smart and plain is the way forward, I can't quite cope with all the dead sheep and bling! (ignoring the shiny space man helmet, got that in a moment of maddness! though I do love the spaceman look :p ) Then again I don't like cleaning anything unneccessary so the less there is and the darker it is the better!

The wonderful thing about BS is that its not what you look like but how you perform that counts! Neat and tidy is best but dont go over-board

Wise words TM :D. Thank you :D

That was her response when someone told her she would be laughed out of the ring for GM having a long mane (albeit in a running plait) - said she'd just have to beat them :D :D. Not sure what chance they have, but so long as they are clean, neat, tidy, smart, stick to the rules, are polite, and have fun, then that's what matters :D

The cleanliness/tidyness bit, or rather the lack of it, is sad :(

We might be a bit tatty if we're just in the school, but when going out, even if just for a hack around the roads, we're reasonably tidy, i.e. mud off and tack clean, with riders not looking too bad.

Ah well.

When she does get to go, we'll take pics and you can see how all the black/red/spot of bling/minimal sheep works :D

I am merely the banker in all of this :D. D1 has her own views (and at her age now, all I can do is attempt to guide lol).

She likes understated and dark, with just a bit of bling, and the bare minimum number of sheep :cool:

:D

I like her style :D No sheep and black crystal bling browband for the boy here, smart for me, no plaits as I never have the time (for me or him lol)...

I do have a thing for white boots for him tho :o
(v impractical in reality)

The problem with long manes is that they get in the way, you pull your reins and you have a handfull of mane. I don't like riding horses with long manes especially if you need a bit of precision. I also think they look awful on horses where it isn't a breed thing to have a long one, but I guess you wouldn't like my horses short mane:p

The nice thing about BS though is that it doesn't matter what you wear or look like, no one cares at all as long as it is safe.
