BSJA Assessment at SHBGB Grading.... Anyone done it?

Can anyone advise me on the format and really what they are looking for?

And more importantly any idea of how many pass, and for those that don't what in your opinion might be the reason they failed?

I am thinking of taking my chap as unfortunately due to a virus over the summer he hasn't had the work and I feel isn't quite ready to go for a full grading. (I will add he does look very well and pretty fit, he's just not had the practice at jumping courses under saddle that he needs to give a polished enough performance at a grading!!)

I am keen to take him BSJA over the winter but reluctant to pay the surcharge, this seems to be my only option and I've only got til Thursday to decide as thats when entries close!!

Any advise or thoughts will be gratefully received....

He is a 5yo by Unbelievable Darco out of a Zarlequin mare, he was only backed last year and only started jumping this year so he is a bit behind compared to most 5yo's!
This is him, taken in the spring, he's filled out a bit more now as he's got more muscle!!

why dont you get wetherbys ntr license this yr, do lots of unafilliated over the winter, then january start getting him ready for march/april aes grading, you have time, this year is nearly over, get ready for next???at least you can issue cc
 
We took ours to assessment as we were not sure wether to fully grade him or not, just wanted to get him jumping. Similare to grading just dont ride or pre vet. Loose jumping they got carried away with biggish fences so just make sure your boy is happy with that.
 
WE TOOK OUR 5YR OLD AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR WITH THE UNDERSTANDING THAT HE WOULD BE EXPECTED TO JUMP A MAX OF 1.15M BUT IT ENDED UP 1.30M HE DID IT AND GRADED BUT I DONT KNOW WHY THEY MADE HIM DO THIS BUT BE PREPARED YOU DONT WANT TO TAKE HIM AND FAIL IT FELT LIKE THEY WERE TRYING TO FAIL MY BOY BUT COULDNT THEN THEY KNOCKED HIM FOR LACK OF STALLION PRESANCE AND TOP LINE ALL I SAW WAS A VERY WELL BEHAVED 5YR OLD STALLION! PUT HIS COVERING BRIDLE ON AND YOU CAN SEE HES GOT STALLION PRESANCE!!!
THE BSJA WILL REFUND YOU IF HE GRADES IN THAT 12MTHS SO YOU ARE PROB BETTER TO LEAVE IT TILL NEXT YEAR IT IS ALL VERY DAUNTING FOR THEM IF THEY HAVENT DONE VERY MUCH!!

I'm thinking that might be a good idea, I called yesterday and I'm waiting for them to send me the info.... just need to find the £450 to do it!!

Yes I do hope to take him in the spring if I go for SHB, if I go BWBS I think they only do 1 a year in the autumn, but I guess he'll have to do the BSJA ridden assessment anyway at some point as the BSJA don't accept BWBS grading!! God this stallion owning business is never easy!!

You do get the surcharge back if they grade in the same year but to be honest I don't really have the £500 in the first place at the moment, as the 2 youngsters we were hoping to sell aren't quite ready to go yet... and its a big lump of cash if for any reason he doesn't grade.

The one thing I was going to check is if the £500 is a one off or its £500 for year... will check that as maybe I just need to swallow a stiff drink and use my credit card and pay it!!!
