BSJA bods, ponies in seniors?

Just out of interest does anyone compete a small pony in seniors? im not thinking of doing it as such i just over heard someone chatting about it at a tack shop t'other day and wondered how that works. surely making the stride would be difficult etc?
 
I'm sure someone will tell me if I'm wrong but you can't compete a pony in seniors can you

Yes you can register a pony in seniors but i think they have to be 14.2? or around the 14.2 mark. Some ponies have a naturally long stride so cope well in seniors, others with smaller strides don't cope so well.
 
Well just looked at BSJA website and it's not very clear but it says a full member can jump a pony so that would qualify for seniors, would think you would look a bit out of place though

My son rides a 15.1 and she struggles with some of the big horse stiriding!
 
I *think* you can compete a 14hh/14.1hh upwards in the Seniors if you are an adult although am not 100% sure. Anything smaller would really really struggle with the strides!!
 
Lol- yes if you were over 16 you'd compete it in seniors! Anyone younger would compete it in ponies.

Ponies who have jumped as ponies can register as a horse, but then to jump as a pony again that whole year registration has to run out so you can then re register them as a pony (say if the pony was sold on). Not sure if they also need a height certificate to be re registered as a pony?
 
You can indeed jump a pony in seniors...not sure if there is any minimum height that you are allowed to do this, but generally it's done by people with 148's (or thereabouts) and they just have to accept that the strides will be set longer for horses. You can re-register the horse as a pony afterwards, but as has been said, this can only be done at the end of the registration year, or as part of a change of ownership.
 
I'm pretty sure any person of Junior associate or full member (14 and over) can ride any horse or any pony in seniors but that pony has to remain in senior classes with that rider, i.e. can't do junior one week then senior the next. There are quite a few ponies doing senior, you'd be suprised! Personally I'm not keen but thats only because I have a giant tank of a horse and the little ones always beat me!!

thanks for clearing that up!! i am not of affiliated level but i must admit there is a lack of decent non-aff events and as an adult on a pony i dont always want to jump against kids!! but there we go! shouldve bought a tank i guess!
 
No I totally agree with that, one of the reasons I do BSJA is because I can't compete with kids on ponies in unaff! My horse is quick and turns well but she's no pony! You'll find BSJA is much more concentrated on getting double clears rather than whizzing round, a lot of the time a nice double clear will get you a good place.

There have been some very good ponies jumping in horses. What was the name of the pony that Charlotte Platt used to ride.. was it Taldreys Tiger Flight or Tiger Lily? Something like that.. its back jumping in ponies now with Jordan Whittaker I think, but Charlotte did exceptionally well on it and even jumped YR classes on it! There have been others as well, like Robocop and Sorcerers Apprentice.

Its generally not a good idea but some ponies are amazing and do make the strides even in big classes. This tends to be the exception rather than the rule though!

Stroller was probably the most famous of the ponies jumping in seniors....jumped in the Olympic Games with Marion Mould (nee Coakes).

i just feel very restricted with what i can and cant do on her sometimes, shame really because [although im baised] she is ten times better than alot of horses i know!
 
It was Pauldary's Tiger Flight - saw Charlotte ride it in Junior Newcomers Regional Final at Ridgewood 4 years ago! Vanoc was another good pony back in the 70s, that went on to do well, though obviously not as well as the great Stroller, on going into horse classes when his rider was out of Juniors.
 
yes and a few more as well. Bless Sorcerers Apprentice, I do love that pony. Sam did seem to struggle with him getting the distances at 1m20+ at senior level though. Depended very much who was building as some classes he was absolutely fine but if built slightly long it just pushed him a bit too far. Not seen him this year but last year he was near top of the Bicton U18 champ on points through the season.
 
Hmmph...lucky for some. Over here you can't do affiliated eventing or SJAI once you're over 16, hence bboth me and my sister have had to sell our 14.2's when we 'outgrow' them.
Now, I was starting to be a touch big, but she is nowhere near too big, neiter are several other people i know. It's not really fair I don't think.
However, I think there are a lot of ponie who wouldn't make the strides, both of ours would have.
