BSJA for newbies?!!

Hi there,

Having been at uni for some 6 years, I'm back home and riding again. Have been to a couple of shows jumping at 90cm and both me and my pony are having a fab time. However, unaffiliated shows seem to only go up to 90cm in my area, and pony sails round metre courses at home.

We would like to give BSJA a shot, and I'd like to give British Novice a go. However, it's all very confusing! I'd like to go on a ticket, just to have a go. So my questions are as follows:

1. Can I, a 23 year old, take a 14hh pony to jump BSJA?

2. Given that neither of us have done it before and have no BS points, are we category C?

3. How do I go about getting a ticket and entering with it?

Sorry that these are very newbie questions and thank you all in advance :)

Can you take a 14hh 23 yr old affilliated - yes. But becuase you are over 16 you must enter the horse classes. The striding will be set for horse not pony strides.

Are you category C? Yes if you register the pony as a horse - or JD if you register as a pony. You'll need a height certificate if you do the latter.

How do you go about getting a ticket? Depends on whether you want a day ticket or to affilliate longer term. You need to set up an account on the British Showjumping website here https://www.britishshowjumping.co.uk/membership/Fees-And-How-To-JoinRenew and basically follow the instructions. Once you have registered yourself and the horse / pony you can buy day tickets online here https://www.britishshowjumping.co.uk/membership/Day-Tickets-to-Ride

Thank you much for your reply, this is very helpful! He has a horse stride anyway and can't cope with pony strides so that's fine. What's the difference between registering as a horse or pony? I'm happy to register him as a horse if that's allowed in light of the fact he's only 14hh. If he needs to register as a pony, how do I go about getting a height certificate and can I still compete in senior?

Thanks every so much and sorry for all the questions! I'm not competitive at all and just go to shows for the fun of it, just wanting to step up the height! :)

If registering as a pony you can’t do senior classes. If registering as a horse (where I think they have to be a minimum of 14hh) you cannot then also do pony classes for a year (I may be wrong there, it might be 2 years). Basically you can’t chop and change between horse and pony in the year.

Re tickets quite a lot of shows in my local areas do free tickets to ride at club shows. They have a 70cm then 80cm for unaffiliated combinations then do British novice and above. You just turn up and get the ticket when you enter.

Thanks so much! This is really helpful. What's the difference between registering as a horse Vs registering as a pony? Can I register him as a horse even if he is a pony?

with your age you cant jump him as a junior, which is when he would be registered as a pony. If you wish to compete him yourself, he must be registered and jumped as a horse in senior classes. He must be over 142cm to compete as a horse though
