Sorry as this is probably a very dumb question

I know you are unable to compete ponies after a certain age. So obviously that is anything up to 14.2 but to compete on a 'horse' does the horse have to be over 14.2 or does it include 14.2's? I am guessing it doesn't but just checking.

hi you can jump 14.2hh in horses. it just annoys some people but each to there own i say!
i think there is a restriction on ponies being swapped from juniors to seniors. think your allowed to do it twice ( junior to seniors then back to seniors)

Ah thanks.
I am wanting to eventually affiliate if I get a horse to compete on as my lad is 13.1. But I am looking for something relativly small around the 14.2-15.2 mark so was wondering if i ended up with a 14.2 if i could compete it in the horse classes.

yeah you can but i would get something over 15hh as all the distances are on horse strides.

Yeah true just depends if I find something suitable in my price range. But then again I am going to uni this year so it may be a while longer to wait and who knows what will happen to horse prices in the next 4 years lol.

Yes you can, a 'horse' can be any height. If a pony is registered as a pony you have to wait for the year's registration to run out before you can re-register it as a horse to do seniors but I think you could jump seniors on a ticket in that time. I compete Shad who is about 14.2hh in seniors and I know someone else who has done it. The only thing with jumping ponies in horse classes is that some struggle with the striding but some manage fine - Shad always sorts herself out by lengthening or putting in extra srides, you're never more than half a stride out anyway! Hope you find a nice horse/pony!

You can compete any size horse in seniors, a couple of my JAs have been registered as horses and ponies, we registered them as horses and competed seniors when there was a shortage of decent junior jockeys in my area but they can only be changed between horses and ponies, on a change of ownership, so you have to reregister the horse into someone elses name.

Oh right never knew that, see it is true you learn something new everyday!
Thank you all for your advice it has really helped to clear things up.
I agree the striding is a very valid point and will certainly keep that in mind if and when I go to veiw.

Thanks for your last comment Helen

In the past I have found that change of ownership is not necessary to change pony/horse horse/pony only that you pay again for the re-registration to the BSJA.

It is also a shame that too many people find it ok to compete small horses in pony classes - perhaps the BSJA should make strickter rules to pony sizes - but hey - thats another forum subject - sorry

I think they should increase the size for ponies upto 158cms, because my jockey is only 14 and she is kicking all the 14.2s in the back of the knees she is so lanky, but I doubt that will ever happen

Seriously though, ponies have to be measured when they have won a certain amount so "in theory" you shouldn't get small horses but i agree you do get some rather large looking ponies but I don;t think the owners can be blamed entirely, there needs to be a better LHC system but thats just my opinion.

people do all sorts of things to get that magic 148cms lhc.
lunging for hours/ horse walker for hours before the measurement and hacking off a substantial amount of foot.
a friends pony had a random measurement check at a show a came in at 151cms, lost their appeal and their hoys qualifier with it.

If the LHC system was changed so that to get the LHC the measurement had to be done by a vet AND a steward from the JMB, there would be less 'over height' ponies going through, they should also refuse to measure ponies that turn up footsore or test ponies that they suspect have been dehydrated ot doped etc to be measured in, true some people do all sorts of things but not everyone, I bought a pony that had been measured out and I appealed it and she measured in comfortably with a JMB steward present and I would never dream of cutting of too much hoof or over excercising (infact that would have just made her bigger in this case because she is really busy and the more she does the more fruit loop she gets!), the only thing we did was clip her withers because she had a thick coat and if she had been measured out by a hair I would have been kicking myself for leaving the hair on there!
I don't necessarily agree with measuring ponies at shows because I think the LHC system should be more effective in the first place and ponies shouldn't be able to slip through the net and get to that level if they are overheight in the first place, I feel sorry for the child that rides the pony, it must be devastating getting something taken off of you for something the child has no control over.

We had a fifteen two that competed seniors with my then fourteen year old son but it had a very short pony stride and struggled with distances especially once you get past Discovery! I have seen ponies with big strides doing it easily so stride is all important!
