Hi, I would really like to start BSJA.
I'm 17, so i'd be an associate member, i think :S
If you are an associate member, can you only compete on horses 14.3hh + ?
Do you think BSJA is good, and have you benefitted from it?
Thanks.

Regarding asociate membership, it may be better for you to contact the BSJA direct. They are very helpful & will tell you anything you need to know.

As to the benefits of BSJA, there are several. The course builders are all well trained & no matter where you go to jump the courses you jump are always built to a good standard. They are also built up to height. BSJA keep a full record of your achievement on your horse listing any double clears, placings, money won etc. This can provide you with an accurate record of achievement when you come to sell your horse. You can also qualify to jump in some big tournaments, HOYS, Scope, Blue Chip & others which is a great experience.

The downside.....well, it's quite expensive to become a member & affiliate your horse. The prices of the classes you will be jumping will be more than double, sometimes treble the price of your local riding club entry fees. You will spend a lot of time waiting around for your class as you never know how many there will be in any class you are jumping in or in the class/es before you. This isn't too bad in good weather but in the rain it gets a bit much. Good Luck if you decide to do it.

i thought if you had a pony you could jump it as a senior, but only if you reregistered it as a "horse"

if not then im screwed when i want to affiliate

dopeesophee - i thought that you could register a pony as a horse too, but then i got told it was when your 16 and for a year? but im a bit confused.
so can you compete a 14.2, if you are a senior?

well im 16 in 11 days; so could register her at like the end of august for winter season (so i an get more training in)
and then i thought i could ride as a junior associate until im 17in the junior classes
and then once im 17 reregister her as a horse and jump seniors??

but im confused now

well ive heard of people jumping ponies in senior classes?
at the end of the day if you can do it and the pony can make the strides surely its ok??

yeah i think it should be okay, i guess we should probably ring them up and find out?
i think the problem is that they cant make the strides, but i am confused now.
someone also said that you can if the ponies were JA? but i think that is lots of rubbish, i dont know haha.

I think, if your pony is registered as a pony then you want to change it to a horse it has to have won a certain amount of money or a certain grade before it can be reg as a horse.

If not reg before, you can reg as a horse but in both cases once reg as a horse you cannot then reg as a pony again.

I'm sure that's right but give them a ring.

Oh and you can compete as a senior when your 16/17 but you can only be a associate so you have to get a parent eg to become the owner. You can become a full member and owner when your 18 i think.

You become a senior/assoc the jan after your 16th birthday, you will have to register your pony as a horse and you can carry on jumping it but if a junior wants to ride it you will have to re register it as a pony, pretty sure thats right.

so id be all cool to just register as a horse and jump seniors next january

that gives me lots of time to train
and try get mum to get me a horse too :P

You can register your pony as a horse & jump in senior classes, I am unsure what happens if the pony has winnings already in pony classes though. Regarding the distances, think you will be fine to a certain level, but the problem will come with larger fences with a one striding double with an oxer out as you may struggle to make the back rail.

wilmas got a long stride so should be able to make the distances; and a big jump, she normally sorts herself out and gets out of sticky situations

she doesnt have winnings at bsja pony level though
