BSJA - Help?!!

Hi, I just joined BSJA this week, I've read the whole handbook but I'm still getting confused by lots of it!

1. I'm wanting to compete over 1.10 , I haven't competed with BSJA before, whats the best class to start with which will allow me to test myself and my 17hh horse (might be our last season together and want to make the best of it and test both our scope (he has lots) )
2. I bought my horse well over a year ago, he has a BSJA number, do I need to re-register him before competeing?
3. Are you allowed to wear chaps in competitions?

Hi, it is a bit confusing isn't it! I would say Newcomers would be the right class for you if you want to compete over 1.10m- this class will be 1.10m in the first round and 1.20m max height in second round. If you've not been affiliated before then the biggest thing you will notice is the courses are a LOT more complicated- there will be twists and turns, there may be options where you can take, for example 2 short strides off a wall or 1 long one.

If your horse was previously registered and has a number you still have to register him again but just use his existing membership number.

Not sure about chaps- are they the leather gaiter types that look like boots? You would probably get away with them but not proper chaps.

Thank you, I've found he is grade C . I am currently re-registering him, do you know whether I will have to pay the £75 registering for a grade C horse, or whether, because he has been previously registered I will only have to pay the £10 change of ownership??? I'm confused!
 
You need to check what winnings your horse has, as my horse is registered as a "Grade C" but he is still out of Newcomers. The class goes on his winnings.

The other thing I would say is to go and watch a BS (BSJA changed to BS a few years ago) as a lot of people find that the jumps are a lot WIDER than in unaffiliated competitions, and you may prefer to start in a lower class until you are accustomed to the wider fences.

I would agree with the above! The fences are so much more complicated! It may be a good idea to ring BS up and ask for help with registering as they will be really helpful. You can always do the national amateur classes if your horse is out of Newcomers or jump HC.
 
I'm sure you will enjoy the structured challenges of BS and as others have said going to a few shows to watch would be wise as there is quite a difference from most unaffiliated in terms of course height, width and technicality. It can seem daunting as the rules are complicated but each area of the country has a Regional Development Officer employed by BS to help new members, amongst other things. Call BS and get their details as they should be a source of advice in the early stages of your membership.
