BSJA: How high should you be able to do before you join?

I think you should be happily jumping 3ft 3" before you consider parting with membership cash

I'd suggest you try on a ticket. So tracks come up small and others appear huge!!!

Oh I don't even plan on trying - the highest ive done in a comp is 75cm and 1.20m at home (and that was only upright) make them wider and we have no chance

.

I was curious as i hear of many folk that just seem to join, but then fret about a 75cm course, which I so on't get as to me (maybe from when I was younger) I see BSJA as something to aim for by 1st at least being able to jump a RC open course clear.

I agee with what has been said, you could do with being able to jump a 1mtr course. Additionally you need to be able to get your horse to work well from behind so he can jump spreads which will be approximately as wide as they are high.

Rather than pay around £175 to register yourself & your horse have a go around a course at one of the BSJA shows on a ticket. It will cost you about £6 in addition to the entry fee. It's a good way to 'test the water' & see if you & your horse are ready, without the need for a high financial outlay.

I'm not sure that height is the only thing to think about - many BSJA courses are quite an 'eyeful' for horse and rider and depending on the class and coursebuilder can contain some schooling tests. Personally I'd go for a few sessions with a good trainer who also has excellent facilities, try without competition pressure and learn in the process.

BSJA intro shows are great if your not sure, they provide well built courses to BSJA standard but with lower heights. I'm starting my 4 yr old at intro shows in march, and hope to be jumping double clears discovery by the end of the year (thats 1m) at home my horse is jumping 90cm tracks, and out we have been getting double clears at 80-85cm. I think take the height your jumping a course round at home and then take it doen by a few cm and then you will know what your ready for.

Beau2005 - As you probably know we dont have any intro shows up our way just now after Fountain have changed to normal progressive/advanced shows like Loanhead.

TBH, Id agree that its best to be jumping intermediate / 1m courses confidently, and that being full up courses too. BSJA courses are far more up to height, spreads are wider and there's more related distances etc. But its excellent to do as you'll find the courses SO much better built

Best thing to do is probably go and watch some BSJA near you so you can see the courses. You could also hire the school after a BSJA competition to jump round? What I would say is Loanhead is probably not as spooky as Fountain with their lovely bright coloured fences!
