What colour is your horse.....

I don't think it matters but like the last person said, you would look out of place. The BSJA is not like the pony club or a little riding club and they have a certain standard to uphold. To be honest although I don't compete BSJA anymore I really hate the new jackets that they have, I think they look very unprofessional. The BSJA has always been considered slightly elitist, whenever this is due to the considerable membership fee or whether its due to the fact that its aimed more towards the serious competition rider I'm not sure. I personally would cringe to see blue tendon boots, bit rings and numnahs in that kind of atmosphere but I suppose its entirely up to you. I take it you are a child. At the risk of getting slaughtered by other posters, I think the colour scheme is something you will grow out of as you get older and wiser. No offence, I was the same at your age. Now I think a dashing white saddlecloth with a nice trim and matching boots is the epitome of every nice about showjumping!

Tbh The yard Im at hold bsja comps regulary and most of the kiddies (even some of the adults) have matching numnahs, boots, fly fringes etc. I dont think you would look out of place at all

I thought so. Bless you - at least you are honest. Like I say no offence intended. I used to be just like you and in the 80's and early 90's people used to use elastic leg bandages much more than boots and I used to deck my TB chestnut mare out in red numnah and black exercise bandages with red gamgee and red and black over reach boots and thought she was the coolest thing on the planet! Now at the grand old age of 38 I look back and smile! Now I deck my horse out in either a white saddlecloth for dressage as he has four white socks and white blaze so looks smashing (shortly to be followed by dimante browband and new black and white bridle) for dressage or blue velvet saddlecloth with black tendon boots for showjumping (i have a navy show jacket and hat).

I must say that I agree with arneypie - who cares what you look like? Everyone's doing it anyway...if you go to any Junior BSJA show, the kids are done up like dog's dinners! Matching boots, numnahs with gold embroidery, personalised jackets/hats/rugs, bling bridles and not to mention the new trend for riding hats and show jackets COVERED in diamantes!

Making the decision to go BSJA is about aiming to raise the standard of your riding, and improving how you and your horse perform together. It shouldn't matter what you look like, so I say....get out there and have some fun!! Good luck!

We should be encouraging kids to raise their standards and strive to perform at affillianted level...not slating them for their choice of tendon boot colour. Times have changed, and remember how much you loved it as a kid!

I do have 2 say you wouldn't look out of place I do Bsja Juniors and i have matching fly fridge, boots and saddle cloth (White and gold :S Sponsors)
But my hat matches my sj jacket.
If your doing juniors all the people wear matching things. Just if you were thinking of doing seniors they are a bit more subtle with the colour scheme. You can't look any worse than this little girl i know who has bright purple everything!
Hope it helps

agree with above posts really.

if you're doing juniors i think the matching stuff is fine :) most people in juniors have matching stuff, you wont stand out atall.

however if you do seniors..i would suggest not so much with the matching - seniors are less 'out there' with their colouring...so would just have the coloured numnah and possibly fly ear covers - but black/brown boots and bit rngs to match horses colour (if they wear them).

:) have fun! xx

EH? Everyone BSJA has matching things, lots of bling and the most multicoloured competition jackets around

No, its not like eventing with tweed and plain tack and looking exactly like it did 50 years ago. Unlike the more backward sports BSJA has attempted to go with the times and have greater appeal to the general public

Non-horsey people have often asked why we are competing in suits - not very modern is it and makes our sport look very elitist and out of date.

Only thing I do hate is swapping from BSJA to BS

Can I point out that if you are 17 this year you will have to register your pony as a horse as you are too old to jump juniors. The rule is that you are out of juniors at the end of the year in which you are 16, ie last year. No reason why you can't have fun in seniors with your pony but take care with distances in combinations as unless he is big striding - esp as he is only 14hh - he will struggle.

Have fun!

I totally disagree. I have one and it is so much more practical that silly old-fashioned show jackets which really offer no purpose to our sport! I hate that we have to wear such silly clothing for a lot of disiplines and am ALL for modern improvements. I mean, all other sports use high tech wicking fabric etc. - its all tailored to be practical within your sport. Show jackets are utterly useless!

The BSJA in my opinion have the LEAST amount of guidelines on dress. RC and PC are way more strict!

I personally think this girl can wear whatever she likes. To say that she won't look right is rubbish. If she's doing junior level then I've seen plenty of kids with glittery / pastel coloured boots etc. And even if she does senious - who cares?!

I turned 16 last year, and was not allowed to compete on my pony anymore, so i've had to sell him and buy a 15.3hh. If you're nearly 17, I'm guessing you're doing seniors, and just be aware that if you jump your pony in seniors and then go to sell him, he'll never be able to jump juniors, and so this may seriously decrease his appeal?

Yes now doing seniors as i'm 17 (18 in september) Pony was sold last year.

Clairepauling that's not true. I have produced a few jumping ponies which I have registered and jumped seniors and then sold to juniors who have gone on to be very successful.

For juniors you can basically wear whatever you want, i have seen people in every colour under the rainbow out at Rowallan and Ingliston and even at pony premiers.

For seniors i think its maybe a bit more frowned upon to look like christmas tree, but noones really going to stop you.

Bare in mind that as you are 17 soon you will have to register as a senior and therefore will be jumping horse height and distances on a 14hh pony, so you may want to check that he will be able to make the distances ( I mean at doubles and trebles) before you pay all the money to register him. (:
