Im just fillig out my membership forms and at the bottom where you sign it says this..

I am aware that member may not compete as owneror rider or officiate in any capacity at shows which are not affiliated to the BSJA at which the prize money in any competition exceeds £10.00 in cash or in kind.

What does this mean? Will I still be able to compete in unaffiliated comps as long as the prize money is less than £10?

Sorry if this is a dim question, but I want to be sure of what Im signing.

Yes that is true-no unaffilaited if the prize money is £10+.

Unaffiliated round me they don't even give prize money so doen't cause a problem!

Actually there are several loopholes to this clause and many show centres get away with offering more than £10 prizemoney and still allowing BSJA members to participate...I think they call it Equitation jumping or something like that lol!

Yep it means you can compete in a unaffiliated class offering prize money of say £50. If you win you can only take home £10. If prize is in kind, say a rug, you cannot take anything home.

Its to encourage you to only jump at BSJA.

Rubbish. Nobody would ever know! As long as the rules for an unaffiliated dont say no BSJA members then how could the actual BSJA stop you?!

Ive competed in the odd unaffiliated offering rugs as prizes etc. and would merrily take one home if I won it, same as I would if it offered any money prize. Ive seen plenty of other BSJA riders do this.

When you join the BSJA you sign to acknowledge that you cannot win more than £10 unaffiliated

You can break the rules, but would be expensive and emabarassing if you got caught. Plus if you are affiliated, why go to local shows to try and win?
