Morning all,

I'm a complete novice at the BSJA game!

I recently came fourth at a venue in the south-east, in the british novice. I was over the moon as it was the first time I had managed to jump a double clear!

I didn't realise that I had won £13 (!!!!) until I had got back and checked my bsja membership.

Should I have collected this from the secretary on the day or should it have been given to me in the rosette presentation?!
I know i've lost the £13 now, but need to know for the future. (fingers crossed anyway!)

sometimes they give it to you in an envelope with your rosette, sometimes you have to collect it from the secretary - it depends on the venue.

but if you do get placed and you are not given it in the presentation, just go and politley ask the secretary

If you got your rosette and no money, then you may well not have won anything

Prizes are awarded for every 5 riders taking part, so for a 4th place to have money there would have to had been 20-24 competitors in the class.

I was so thrilled! I just rushed off to buy polos instead!!!!
I'll remember that!

There were over 40 in the class so I'm pretty sure I would have won some cash!
 
Usually you have to go to the secretary to collect the money. If you have won a rosette then you should get prize money.

Well done on your placing!
 
Actual = cash in hand

Notional = Cash that goes on the horses record and these amounts decide which classes you can enter and grading.

For example for your 4th you won (albeit forgot to pick it up!) £13 and your horse will get £8 on his notional

Why do they do different amounts?
 
Because if you won your first 4 British novices, you'd be straight out of that class with £100 actual. However the notional is only £48, so slows down the accumulation of winnings.

So this helps you stop going up the grades quite so quick (you now have £92 left before you can no longer jump in BN)

On saying that once you reach over £100 the Discovery limit of £175 comes up very fast!
 
It aslo helps to even out the variance in the amount of prize money given. For instance round my way thefirst prize for BN varies from £25 to £50 but no matter how much you actually win only £15 is added to notional so fair to all.

also it regulates the prize money for grading cos different venues give different amounts of money. for the intro classes you only get £1 notional so you can carry on jumping 90cm and not reach the discovery limit for a very long time if you wanted to

This is a concern I have atm. Currently on £78 notional from just 5 DC's at BN and a couple of other placings.

If your horses's BSJA record shows that you won £13 then you defo won that money and not just a rosette.
You won't have lost the prize money just ring the show centre asap and say you forgot to collect it on the day.
They will have it tucked away in an envelope for you I bet !!
BSJA shows have to pay out at least the class entry fee as winnings (1 in 5 entered) so no doubt your class was £13 to enter so if I was you I would want that money back in my pocket
