Just been looking on BSJA for some local (ish) BSJA on 20th Dec as it looks like the one I thought was at Broomes isn't as the date seems to be on one calendar and not the other and saw that Rockhampton have BSJA on the 20th. What's it like as a venue?

Wales and West has been cancelled on the 20th - not surprising as entries didn't reach double figures at the last show.

Rockhampton is not the best venue - v small and dark and the warm up is a nightmare. Needs a lot of investment! However saying that the people are very friendly and the locals do support it. If you are not on a nippy horse or want to jump larger tracks I would definitely look for an alternative.

From what you've posted about your horse, not sure it's ideal. As said above, warm-up is terrible (open-sided barn with pillars down middle, small and very deep

) I've gone in having only trotted a x pole before now. School very dark and pretty small so not over-inviting for a baby. They are indeed friendly and relaxed, and they build for the conditions so nothing is ever enormous but I'm just not sure it's inviting either. Thinking of taking T and her pony this weekend but that's a bit different

Definitely doesn't sound great for us, thanks for the info. We're happier jumping out than in anyway unless it's a big school.

Pity about W&W, they were running a clear round alongside which would have been perfect to use for a warm up.

Will do the Clear Round at Summerhouse on a Wednesday a couple of times instead, probably much better suited at the moment as can do it in our own time without any pressure.

The going is usually quite deep in the arena too but very nice people ,I took my daughter there last year for the first time since I trained for my BHSAI 30 yrs ago and I remembered it as a fantastic place then with 2 schools and Virginia Peters was head girl .When I saw it I almost cried ,bit of tlc needed .

As other have said, very limited warm up, only on right rein and the arena is also cramped. Much better suited to Junior BSJA with the little ponies that turn on a six pence
Have fun at summerhouse if you're going

I've done some PC rallies up there and shuddered when my mum told me she used to do foxhunters in that arena

rockhampton is friendly and good for kids on ponies, but it is a tad small for horses and it is horrible trying to warm up in the barn with pillars!!!

It could definately do with having some work done to update it a bit!

A friend of mine nearly broke her back when a horse bucked her off in the warm up, and she went head first into one of the pillars

It was always my least favourite venue. Lovely people though, and we used to go there regularly just to support them. Strangely enough, although I personally hated it there we never did too badly - the arena is small but it does ride ok, and the courses are always well built.

I used to jump 17.2s there and they always went really well. They build really nice courses that use the arena well, they won't ever try to catch you out and I like it.
