hi
have recently bought my daughter a new pony and she is wanting to go to some unaffiliated shows for show jumping. Problem is i don't know which classes she is entitled to enter. Show schedule says BSJA rules but cannot find on the bsja website.

Pony is 14.2hh in passport (told this is life height), but he is clearly more than this, probably 15.0hh. He has previous irish SJ points (lots) but nothing for 5 years. I dont know what he did or did not win with previous owner.

schedule for class says restricted "horse/pony not to have won more than £5 jumping" and prizes/rosettes split into horse and pony categories.

so the question is, can i enter the restricted class and does he or rather should he enter as a pony or horse??? do any winnings he had in his youth count for ever?

any help appreciated

PS my daughter not ever won anything so want to enter her in the class she stands more chance of winning, but i would not want to cheat.

Forget what size he "looks" - if he's passported at 14.2hh with a LHC then jump him as a 148cm. Lots of 148cm are big.

No he can't enter the restricted class - how many Irish points has he got? They convert to £ winnings in the UK (forget the conversion rate) so he'll have too much money on his card. She could jump him HC for the experience?

I suppose it depends on how honest you are. If he has irish points in effect he has winnings of over £5. Rather than rely on your height cert put him as a horse it would be embarrasing for your daughter if someone complained about him being over height. Why don't you enter HC, ok she won't 'win' anything but it'll mean she will gain experience and still be legit.

I do not know what HC means? dont laugh - we are not experienced!

I did meet someone who thought the winnings only lasted a limited time (he is 15 now and i just checked his last winning were in 2002 when he was 8). it seems rather unfair that a pony who has not done much for years, teamed with a novice rider, cannot enter a class and "win" - my daughter wants rosettes and the first open class is at 3ft which my daughter cannot jump. The pony club show at half term was pony/rider combination which seems little fairer.

Hors Concours, it means you take part but are exempt from winning. Unfortunately this is one of the problems of buying a pony/horse with winnings. I think the winnings stay for life, i suppose the rule is there to stop pot hunters and give the less experienced a chance, unfortunately you daughter is in this category but the pony isn't.

if you are doing unaffi it does'nt normally matter what the pony has done in the past... when it says its under bsja rules it just means just that under the rules.. for tack turnout speed of class amount of stops falls etc ..normally the class will say combnation of horse or pony and rider not to have won more that whatever say £10 if your daughter is on a new pony to her they have no winnings together so should be able to enter anything they like..some times shows will say not to have come 1st 2nd or 3rd in that height class that means that pony and rider together..you just have to check and read carefully the class rules some times it will state horse or pony never to have won bsja winnings can take part like our local shires classes have a set amount they can have won..bsja winnings do stay for life and this as a rule should only effect you if you bsja or want to do riding club or pony club teams..it will be worth you speaking to the bsja and find out for sure what he has done and how much his british and irish winnings are
